What's difference between reflux and a good "chuck" after BF?
DS3 is a "chucker", unlike his older BF'd brothers. He's a big little boy (5.7kg at 3 weeks), so he takes in a fair bit of milk, which my boobs are happy to comply with. However, he tends to have a vomit after each feed - sometimes not much, other times it's a power chuck. It's usually somewhere in the middle.
As I've not dealt with this in the past (only the "normal" baby possetting after a BF), I'm not sure whether to think it's reflux, or whether it's just a normal spew as the result of DS3 having had too much milk. The vomitting doesn't cause him to scream, though he sometimes gets very upset between a feed and a vomit, I presume because he's got trapped wind that he can't get up (he's not a good burper, despite my efforts to pound his back after a feed ).
My gut tells me he's a chucker as the result of too much milk in his tummy ... but I welcome thoughts and suggestions on trying to deal with it.
Generally it's only a laundry problem Some kids are prone to chucking - my DD did lots of power chucks. But she was generally settled, gained weight well, etc, so no other problem with it.
Our DS1 had reflux and it caused him a lot of distress. It also woke him up and you could hear it coming up his throat. vomit and cue the screaming. DD has a milder form and she doesn't scream so much, but she has to wear bibs all the time. I think you can tell it's reflux as they will vomit whenever, hours after a feed etc and it can be quite chunky/coagulated and smell acidic. I guess if it's not causing your bub any distress, maybe they're just a vomity baby?
There are several types and causes of reflux. Your bub sounds like what we call a 'happy chucker'. A mild form of reflux that he will most likely grow out of as his system develops.
DS had reflux, and his breath was very acidic and very unhappy. Now at 8 months, he is still chucky but not nearly as much and he no longer has the acidic breath or non stop screamyness
Thanks guys - appreciate the feedback. From what you've said, it doesn't sound like it's reflux as his vomit doesn't smell acidic (neither does his breath) and it doesn't distress him to have an upchuck. Sounds like I've just got a happy chucker on my hands ... as well as plenty of extra laundry MadB LOL
