When considered a toddler?

When do babies begin to get considered as toddlers? DH wants to get a stroller for DS as he (DH) hates the pram we've got (bulky & takes up a lot of room) and I went looking at the prams in the Target baby sale that starts this week and they say the strollers are suitable for toddlers only.

Technically they are toddlers after the 1 year mark, but with something like a stroller, I'd be looking at your littlie's size and see whether or not they can sit up well without the additional support closer to the time.

You might find they can handle it a bit before or after the year mark

I'm guessing the strollers in target don't have a recline - but you can get umbrella strollers that are suitable for newborn up, because they recline. Try looking in baby bunting or other baby stores.

I should add DS is just over 6mths at the moment and sits up quite well. (for others who may search this thread later)

I dunno about everyone else but I consider it after they turn 1.

I wouldn't have put my kids in a stroller that early, just cos they can't really support themselves for extended periods of time. But thats just my kids.

Thanks for the info ladies - I was pretty sure it was a bit early for a stroller for DS. Got to remember to buy him an Ergo (he seems taken with these as some friends have one) to carry DS around or put up with the pram for a bit longer. (he didn't like the close carrier that I bought in a colour so he would wear it too. I would have bought chocolate instead of charcoal like he wanted)

Haha is that the only reason he doesn't like the close carrier? We can swap if you like, I have the chocolate coloured one.. and DH doesn't use it cos he uses the Ergo if he carries one of the kids.

12 months + is when they are considered a toddler. I first put DD in a stroller about 11 months and she was ok with it. I couldnt imagine doing it any sooner though.

No, he just isn't used to using it, only tried it once though (men!!! ) I wouldn't let him have a baby bjorn or similar carrier at the start because of what I'd read about baby bjorns and how they weren't good to use early on.

Liz - we bought an umbrella stroller as we were going on holidays and didn't want to take our massive pram, I have used it three times when have flown interstate and DS has been fine and comfortable in it, he first used it at 7 months as he could sit comfortably in it. The one I bought was a red 'holiday' brand from Big W - I think it was $89, it reclines almost fully so DS can lie almost horizontal when needed or sit completely upright, and is very supportive...... It has a canopy and basket underneath. We still use our big pram most of the time just because I prefer it (more room for shopping etc) but DS isn't fussed either way - Hope that helps
