I'm just wondering what's the average age to move a toddler out of the cot into a big bed? We don't have a toddler bed and aren't planning on getting one but we have a single bed. I said to DH that it's probably a good idea at first to just put the single mattress on the floor and then after a while set up the bed properly when we move DD out of the cot...I just don't know when to move her out of the cot or when to move the mattress off the floor onto the single frame.
I left DS1 in his cot as long as possible, basically until it was dangerous not to move him, i.e. he was climbing out, so around 2.5years.
He fell out of his bed for a long time, we did the matress on the floor for a few months but hed just sleep on the mattress not the bed so we got rid of it. His cot converted to a bed though, so it was rather low to the ground, but then you can get single beds that are quite low as well.
It's a standard height so far too high for a toddler hense why we'll start with the mattress on the floor.
We're moving soon and I'm not sure whether to set up her new room with a cot or bed.
DD1 went into one at 2 because she could climb out of the cot.
we used two side rails on the bed (down one side, it was up against a wall) so she couldnt get out or climb out, worked well! she now has no rails but i do have a small pillow under the bottom sheet so she cant roll out
we only did as we have a holiday home and he was too big for the port-a-cot there so we put him in a single with a side barrier so when we came home we moved him into big bed here
you get some great bed rail things we stopped using ours about 2 mths back so he was 31mths
Thanks for your responses. It appears from what I've read that between now and 2 and a half is normal...Might give it a go when we move house in a few months rather than setting up the cot only to pack it up again shortly afterwards.
Danni, we moved ds into a toddler bed at about 17 months. He fell out twice but learned quick We actually managed to do it at the same time he dropped from two sleeps a day to one- he was so tired by nap time, it didn't mater where he slept. We had no problems.
ETA- I was worried about house wandering too, so I put a baby gate up on ds's room. We have a two storey house and I don't entirely trust the gate on the stairs.
There is no way that I would do it while we live in the house we live in at the moment as DD's bedroom is not child friendly. I am just thinking of ways to set up her new room when we move house and I don't know if we should set it up as a baby room or a child room or have one room set up with her baby things and the other set up as a kids room and then when she's ready just pack everything in the baby room up.
2y2m for us. DS had outgrown the cot at my mum's so we put him in a bed there. When we got home, we changed his cotbed into a toddler bed.
DS quite often slept in our bed - sometimes without us there or us not holding him as he doesn't like that. He never fell out of that either, so I wasn't worried about falling out of bed.
Jaz was 13 months. Only fell out once, I had the fold out couch there JIC.
Bri was about 14 months. We just started by taking the side off the cot. She stayed in it like that til she was 2.5.
Jesse's cot converts to a toddler bed, but I just don't see him as ready yet. Now he's mostly sleeping through I might do it soon, but not til I know he won't wander the house in the middle of the night, lol. I also have rails that will go on the sides, once the cot sides come off.
