18 months - how many words?

When I dropped DD off at CC this morning her daycare mum mentioned that the CDO had been out yesterday. All good - I know what they do.
She questioned me this morning about how many words DD was using. She says mum, dad, bub and shoes clearly ATM and other words that sound like something but we aren't really sure. She also nods/shakes her head when you ask her a question like "did you do painting today at daycare?"

Should I be concerned? She knows what I'm saying and can follow instructions. I didn't think it was an issue yet - but maybe i'm wrong?? We talk to her heaps, read heaps of books, sing songs etc so shes picking things up.

    Thanks Hun.
I thought this was the case - I know heaps of kids who all started talking at different ages. I don't usually try to compare but since she mentioned it and I knew the CDO was there yesterday - I then questioned if maybe what I was thinking was wrong.

    Sums it up nicely!

My niece, who is about 20 months, has a large vocab, but my DD, at 13 months, I don't think has quite as large a vocab as my niece did at the same age!

But I find it hard not to compare my DD and my niece... I must stop doing that! Also, my MCHN said at DD's 12mth check that sometimes kids develop one thing faster than another - eg, they might be really mobile (walking, climbing, etc) but not be so talkative. Or it could be the other way around!

Sounds like her understanding is there - maybe she will surprise you one day with a complete sentence and then you won't be able to shut her up!

They all develop in their own time... worry about it when she gets to three or so

I wouldn't worry at all, DD says lots of things becasue her older brother talks to her all the time and tells her things.. Otherwise DS being the first child didnt say much for a while.

Dont worry about it to much, in the end by the time they get to school, no one will be none the wiser about who crawled, ran or spoke first. She might just be a quiet little one for now and before you know it will be a chatterbox. At around 18mths is when you will see a rapid growth in speech, and they can start learning multiple words a day. She obviously is following instructions well and is very alert.

DD1 was roughly just over 100 words at 18mths, I wrote them down for a scrapbooking page and was shocked and is now onto mini sentences. She is a baby signs bubba though, so it is thought to advance their speech. But this doesnt make her any more intelligent than they next baby.
