Which 2-month vaccinations did you get?

The MCHN was asking me about vaccinations yesterday and I said I didn't know if she would be getting them and she told me that if I wanted the Rotavirus (I think that's the one) vaccination I have to get the 1st one before 12wks otherwise there's no point and they won't give it. She said it's basically just diarrhea and causes dehydration. It didn't sound too serious and I don't know who DD would catch it from anyway! Anyone know more about it?? Thinking I might leave this one out too.

Anyway, I better make up my mind soon seeing as she's 2 months old today!

Even if you did vacc her, you still need to keep babies away from high risk areas - well thats how I look at it anyway!

You can still review the decision, you may want to wait till she is older and her body somewhat more able to cope. Like I said before, mine have both had meales and mumps and I hope they can catch CP somehow - it wasn't too bad at all, just nurse them through it xoxoxox

SJ - I know exactly where your head is at right now. You want to keep your baby safe from disease, if you don't vaccinate, she could get sick, but what if she has an adverse reaction to the vaccine? You wouldn't forgive yourself either way. And like me, DH has/had a differing opinion in regards to vaccination.

I have dvd from V.I.S.A. (Vaccine Investigation South Australia) called Investigate Before You Vaccinate. It has a lot of information about the possdible dangers associated with vaccinating. I'd be happy to post it to you. PM me if you're interested.

In the end, we've decided that DD will have some, but not all. She didn't have Vitamin K or Hep B at birth. She will not have Hep B. We've spoken to our GP about which he feels are absolutely necessary and surprisingly, it was only one or two. DS had all his vaccinations up until 6 months when I discovered the possible dangers involved with vaccinating, so has had none since. He didn't have MMR (neither will DD) and certainly not chicken pox.

Our doctor said, if we were to decide we wanted not to vaccinate at all, he's suggest that we do at least get the tetnus vaccine, as you cannot get natural immunity to tetnus and once you've got it, it's too late.

At the end of the day, it doesn't matter what anyone else says, it has to be your decision and one that you can live with.

I actually caught this when I was 22 months old, from my brothers 4th Birthday Party at Hungry Jacks. Within four hours of the first symptom, my parents tell me I was as white as a sheet and my veins had collapsed. The emergency department spent two hours trying to find a vein to put the drip in. In the end, it went into my foot. I was constantly vomiting and spent four days in intensive care. My friend's son has just been released from hospital this week after having a confirmed case of rotavirus. He spent three days in hospital on a drip and was a very sick little boy. So, perhaps don't let this nurse make it sound like it's nothing major, because it is actually very dangerous. It's not just gastro.

My friends child caught it from a boy at her FDC providers house.

I'm going to make an appt with the Dr next week but I don't know how she feels about vaccination and I want the truth, not to be scared or pressured into anything!! And I also need to know how you get the ones you want seperately?? Need to be armed with that knowledge so they don't just tell me there's no choice.

Ok, well an update. DD still hasn't had any vaccinations. I'm a bit worried about whooping cough, that's the only one that scares me. So the Dr was finding out which vaccinations we could get seperately. The smallest one she said she can get is Diptheria, Tetnus, Whooping Cough, and Polio. That's still 4!! :( And I only want one of them. And even this is a big deal for her to try and order in.

Does anyone know if there's any way of getting them seperately?????????? :(

DD had the Hep vaccination at birth, not because she is in any at-risk group for it, but because DH and I believe strongly in the public health effort to eradicate the disease from our population. Imagine if our children and ourselves were at risk from smallpox because some people didn't want to vaccinate against that 30 years ago (or whenever it was eliminated from Australia!). I think it's best for everyone, including ourselves, to support such initiatives.

DD will be having all of her 2 month vaccinations as soon as she is old enough - on the dot of 2 months. I know that we can't protect her from these things that are in the community because in the end, she has to go out.

DH and myself, and DD's grandparents, have just had the whooping cough vaccination too. It scares me that an adult who doesn't even feel sick could give that to her before she has any protection from it at all! At least she won't get it from those adults that she sees most often, but there is no way to make sure that none of the people who visit us in the next couple of months have it, or none of the people we pass in the park, and so on.



To change direction slightly, there's a point here that people are making that is just plain wrong, sorry to say, and it's a confusing thing so I'm going to have a go at explaining it again.

The problem is confusion about the meaning of the fact (let's assume it's a fact - I don't know that it is, but I'm happy to believe it because it makes total sense) that most of the kids who catch a given disease are vaccinated against it. Let's assume that thing is true, no arguments.

However this does not even slightly mean that it is therefore safer to not be vaccinated against that disease. It worries me a lot that so many parents seem to misunderstand this thing, and that it is mis-used as propaganda by anti-vaccination lobbyists. (some of the other things anti-vaccination people say I have no problem with - the issue is sifting out the real stuff from the fake stuff, and this one is a fake).

The point is that if 99% of kids are vaccinated against a disease, and the vaccination is not 100% effective (I don't think any of them are), then simply because there are so many more vaccinated kids than unvaccinated kids, you will get more vaccinated kids who catch the disease.

But, and this is the big big but: the individual risk to a particular child (my child, for example, or your child) of catching the disease is much much higher if they are not vaccinated than if they are vaccinated.

So if you want to choose to not vaccinate your child, that's your choice as a parent. But please don't choose it because you think that they are less likely to get the disease that way. The fact is that they are much more likely to get the disease if they are not vaccinated, and this is the risk that you are choosing to take - much better to take it open-eyed than to be blinkered about it.

My brother was not vaccinated against measles when we were kids. I still remember how sick he was when he caught it, years later, when we were on holiday, and how my mum felt about him missing his measles vac when she had gotten myself and my sister vaccinated against that (we didn't catch it). Seeing a child dangerously sick from an illness that is largely preventable does bring home the point about vaccinations, in my experience.

I will try to find some of the info I found, too tenar... but one point I do know before I go searching is that if you catch chicken pox whilst unvac'd, you cannot catch it again. You catch it after being vac'd, you can catch it multipul times. ;)

this has been a very interesting thread to read, as i haven't even thought about vacc's yet, but just thought i'd mention pretty butterfly, my 38yr old aunt had ckn pox as a child (she's unvacc) and then has had it again each time her children had it - 3 times. and when she got it as an adult, it made her very sick both times. so it is rare however not impossible to catch it again, vacc or not.

i thought the exact same thing, that once you get it you can't get it again. but i also work in cc and i've heard other people say over the years that they've had it more than once also.
i've heard (don't quote me on it) the ckn pox virus doesn't leave your system in certain people with low immune systems and can re-occur in later life as shingles if stressed etc;, and can make the person quite ill.
i've also had a child at the centre who got a very low dose of ckn pox and then caught it again a few yrs later but it was very severe the second time round.

The only people I know personally who have had it more than once, were vac'd.
2 of my children included!!! ;)

my 10wk old is getting all her vaccinations today.

as someone who experienced whopping cough at 19yrs of age, there is now way a little baby could survive that. i couldn't breathe when i had a coughing fit..so a little baby has no chance. i'm certainly not going to risk it. Whopping cough is so easy to get..you never know who is a carrier of the virus.

I had the measles when i was 15...not long after being immunised i think and i was awefully sick, had 3 weeks off school if i remember correctly. Immunisation is not going to protect you from a particular disease.

I had the birth and 2 month ones done for DS2 but i just can't come to take him back down there to do anymore...still don't know what to do fully but am thinking about vaxing homeopathically. It is so hard to make these dicisions!

I didn't do Harrys until he was 2yo. Kind of worth it in my opinion because I think his body and immune system were more prepared for what it was all about. I mean at 6 weeks, they've barely been exposed to dust let alone anything that the immune system has to deal with - and then they go and stick 7 virii into their body all at once! Thats just insane, IMO.

by 2yo, he had had colds and flus, stomach bugs, played with bacteria. Normal stuff kids do. His immune system was then more primed for such a large dose of stuff to fight off rather than risk it being inundated and overloaded.

Just if you do go that way, be prepared for them to try and push the WHOLE lot onto you at once. No and Hell No! I wasnt happy about 7 virii at 2mo. I am hardly going to be pleased with near 15 of them at any age!

Heaven i completely hear you on this dilemma, sometimes it just feels as though there isn't enough info out there to make an informed decision!

Inertia i am interested in what you decided to do with Harry?? What ones did you decide to end up getting etc??
My Kinesiologist said exactly the same thing about overloading them with all those virus's at once....she called it "toxic overload"! Also another thing that gets me is that he is a happy & healthy boy so why do i risk him having a reaction just in case he catches some disease IYKWIM.

Danni, I was fine with Vaxing until I had Harry. By then NSW heath had adopted Infanrix Hexa as the standard, and at 2 months it is given with Prevenar. When I took Haz for his 2 month vax I asked her what this would cover because I was expecting the DTP, and polio but the name in the blue book had a whole bunch of stuff written. So she rattled off this big long list of virii and I think she was expecting me to be all wide eyed and "wow, thats so cool". I just looked at my tiny little vulnerable baby and asked is it even remotely safe to give him that many diseases at once. Of course they are all attenuated, etc etc and it won't harm him blah blah... But it just didn't feel right. So I said I'd wait.

Sadly the surgeries and CHCs around here only carry the Hexa so he got his first hexa at 2yo and prevanar a month later. Then I waited and we did his second Hexa at 2 and a half with prevanar a month later again. His third Hexa was at 3yo and I caved and got Meningococcal done at the same time because there was a bout of Bacterial Meningitis going around and we had spent all day at the hospital waiting for a Tetanus Immunoglobulin for him with cases of it being carried in past us. He will get his MMR in another 4 months. This way I fell that I have fairly given his body a good 6 months to get over the toxins and virii they have pumped into it at each visit.

No one told me about the objection form so I have forgone the immuniastion allowance from the government to do this - but I would forgo it again for Phoebe because the whole idea of pouring a bunch of chemicals, virii - attenuated or not - and other pointless stuff I wont even buy in food such as MSG and Gelatine, into their bodies at such a young age just does not sit right with me.

Variciella isnt a problem with Harry as he had chicken pox already.

With how I kept him away from the diseases in the interim... its not exactly easy. I had 2 kids going to school for his first year but all they did being home was chicken pox and he only got a mild dose. After that a lot of the really dangerous stuff is extremely rare and so long as I kept people with flus away from him for the first year it wasnt too much stress. I didn't have an overly huge social life anyway, lmao.

Inertia thanks for all that info i think i can now make a more informed decision. I have been looking at this book i got in Jaxon's (DS2) baby book for immunisation and i have had a real good read while we sat bfeeding today and i think it is probably best to immunise, but as you say at what stage do you feel confident there body is able to handle such a huge load of diseases?? He has had his full lot of 2 month ones done i just haven't gone back for more at this stage. We are heading away on holidays end of next week for a month so i think i will do his next lot soon as we get back. That will make his time between vaxing 5.5 months....i just really don't want to get the Rotavirus one again though and TBH i don't think they will give it cause it has to be given within a certain timeframe it says in the book.

Not sure if NSW is the same but in WA they do the two needles and the oral dose for Rotavirus for both 2 & 4 month vaxing one is the 7vPCV and its for the Pneumosoccal disease alone and the DTPa-IPV-HepB-Hib is for Diptheria, Tetanus, Whooping cough/Polio (this one used to be orally but it has been phased out) /Hepatitus B/Haemophilus influenzae type B Hib (not realated to flu). The only difference for the six month ones is the Rotavirus oral dose is not in it.

I just went to the Dr's this morning and got a big lecture about missing our DD's 6 month vax(We have decided we dont want to continue with them) but of course he filled my head with all these doubts... Pretty much saying babies who arent vaccinated die :(

Heaven- What would make you choose some vax over others? Im a bit confused about why you would partial vax... DP thinks vaccinating against tetnus is a must do, but where draw the line...?

Not when they were very little, I used to work from home then.
They went when they were 2 and 4 for a short time. My first decision was not to vax though, so part of that was no cc for the first few years xoxox

The thing I dont get is that if vaccinations dont work ie babies who are immunised still catch the disease they are vaccinated against then why take the precautions? There are so many statistics on the whole of vaccinations but I only really care about the affect on one and that is DD if that makes sense? So if I dont vaccinate her does that mean we have to stay at home for the first two years ie no playgroup, shops etc?

No, not at all. We went to playgroups etc. I didn't take my babies out to the shops much but that's more because people are gross - vac or not they still catch things, I just wanted to lower the chances of catching anything yukky when they were very young.

Working from home meant I didn't have to stress about not vaccing and exposure. It wasn't just things like CP etc for me - just the usual day care green snot, rashes, slap cheek etc I wanted to avoid.

That's what I'm scared about, we don't go to playgroups and stuff bc they always have toys they all play with and slobber over lol and I'm always freaking out!! I try not to but it's holding me back from doing more stuff with DD :( so that's also why I'm thinking about vaxxing.

Guys - just to throw something else in the mix - it may be worth looking at models for vaccination in other countries. For example - in Japan the immunisation schedule has been postponed until the child reaches the age of 2 (no child receives a vaccine until they are at least 2). Interestingly, they have one of the lowest infant mortality rates in the world, and controversially, their national SIDS rate also dropped when the new schedule came into effect.

just another one to add something - we havent vaxxed and won't until she is 2 (and will re evaluate at that time as to if we will give some of the schedule)

We have a big sister in school who brings home all the lovely things that school offers..... and you know, Laa has had one cold. She is nearly one.

However, one of the reasons why I am not returning to work in the forseeable future is because we don't want to put her in Child care (and all the germs that come along with it).

Heaven - if you are not doing things like interacting with other mums and her with other kids BECAUSE she isnt vaxed and you are scared of her catching things, you are going to have a VERY Stressful time.

JMO here so nobody jump on me!! lol

But honestly, she is GOING TO GET SICK at some stage. Aside from the side effect issues and the artificial and toxic ingredients of vaccines being the reasons not to vax, the MAJOR premise behind no vaccinating is a fundamental belief in the body's ability to build immunity naturally and progressively as the child grows. For immunity to happen there MUST be exposure to germs. If you arent taking her to playgroups and not letting her use communal toys, she will not have the exposure her body needs to make antibodies. This will mean even common colds can be more severe.
If you are not vaccinating you must actively expose the child to germs (I dont mean take her to the kids ward and make her get coughed on by kids with WC) in order to build the immunity.
SHE WILL GET SICK AT SOME STAGE - but this is natural. The best things you can do is to socially expose her immune system to attack, to make sure she is receiving above and beyond the vit c she needs (which is still the single most effective method of boosting the body's defense against infection that leads to disease) and allowing her to use toys that have been slobbered on.
The creation of the sterile environment is the very thing that will make her sick and allow her to be weak enough to catch any illness going around later in life.


In answer to the original question - at 2 months, Charlotte had none. At 9 months she had a single Hep B shot due to our constant presence in a hospital at the time.

LS- that's exactly it, it is stressful!! I agree with everything you said in theory but when it comes to actually doing it I freak out!! I don't mind her catching common mild illnesses but am always worrying that she could catch something else like WC so tend to stay away :(

I know how you feel! I was like that to begin with, was having to constantly explain our decision not to vax (esp to my mum, who was a nurse and VERY pro-vax) and on the other hand I was so scared I was going to kill my daughter by taking her somewhere she would get sick.

I think though that you just need to bite the bullet. I don't mean take her to the kids with WC, but read up on the illnesses you are especially scared of. Read about the facts and arm yourself with knowledge. Understand that many many children get WC every year all over the world and have very mild symptoms, it is NOT a "deadly" illness in most cases. Same with measles.
Do a lot of reading of the actual facts of the illnesses (not scary propaganda) and you will feel a hell of a lot more confident. If you are able to know the symptoms and recognise them early, get to a doctor and find treatment early then you have a much better plan of attack than fiercely trying to avoid the illness in the first place.
In the end, the only person you are punnishing for your decision is bubs and yourself, and she still may end up sick ;)

you can get multi vitamins and vit c's for little ones - I used Pentavite (I think thats what it is called, comes in a white and orange box) with Charlotte I think when she was your DDs age. It is not so easy when they are little and only just eating, but BF makes it easier, so up your intake - you can't OD on it, you will just pass what you don't use through urine.

Now I give charlotte chewable vit c tablets every day, she loves it. I tried the liquid squirt ones, but she hates them lol so now I squirt them into her porridge in the morning.
So if you can get your hands on some liquid squirts (check with your chemist what age they can have them from) and put it in her water cup, on her porridge, etc.

Of course nothing is as good as fresh and natural fruit and veg, but getting them to eat enough at that age is so hard! lol
Kiwi fruit is MASSIVELY high in Vit C, as are black currants, oranges/citrus isnt the best for little tummies ;)

Charlotte started at day care a couple of months ago, she only goes for a couple of days a week, but I found she was getting snotty and picking up a cough etc every time she was there, which is great in terms of her immune system, but I dont want her sick all the time! So I actually bought her a kids chewable multi, as she has become quite fussy with her veg eating recently, she loves them has one a day with her vit c and I have noticed a huge improvement in her.

Oh lucky, she loves kiwi fruit!

What an interesting discussion. I followed the full vaccination schedule with DS1 and DS2 until a chiropractor said she thought vaccinations (specifically MMR and chickenpox) in close succession may be the cause of DS1 not talking/communicating/having eye contact. I know all links between MMR and autism have been debunked but this woman made one adjustment on my son's neck and he started talking within 10 minutes, saying sentences within a week, so I give her a lot of credit.

What I worry about are the sheer amount of chemicals that are pumped into a tiny baby all in one go, and how their body responds to this. Not autism per say, but communication and behaviour difficulties perhaps.

Anyway with my twins they were born in Scotland where they were not offered Hep B, I declined vit K as they did not have a traumatic birth so I didn't see the need. They did have the polio/whooping cough 4 in 1 jab at about 10 months but I declined the others at the time. I was just terrified about whooping cough.

I did intend to get the rest of the jabs one at a time but my "lovely" GP (and I am not slagging the NHS, this is just my GP) has decided that as I declined them when they were offered I am not able to change my mind. So they would rather see my kids unvaccinated that see a mum deviate from the vaccination schedule. Their theory is that if they do it for me they will have to do it for everyone. Heavens forbid they would see parents thinking for themselves and making individual decisions for individual children:wall:

When I get back to Australia will I be able to get the rest of the needles over a longer period of time, does anyone know? I will be moving back to Victoria.
