    Breastfeeding... Constipated??

    Hey all,

Quick question - do you think bubs can get constipated even if they are exclusively breastfeed?? Jaida has not gone since Wednesday although I would say that was a No 3... it went everywhere. I know they say some bubs can go 5 days without No 2's but she also is a little irritable. Her belly is not distended but she doesn't seem to like me moving her legs around. She is still farting like a trooper.... such a lady LOL

What do you think? If you think it is constipation how can I help her??

If she is exclusively breastfed it is unlikely to be constipation. As long as there are wet nappies as normal the lack of poo is fine. Breastmilk is well used and there is little wasted which is why poos can occur weekly without concern.

Sometimes my bubs would go for days without pooping - and they would always have an irritable day, really cranky, just before the poop, and then they would be super content again. And in hindsight I would always say 'Oh, THAT'S why they were unsettled!' But I never thought of it at the time.

If she's farting I'd say she's not blocked or anything. xo

I would say that's pretty common for a breastfed baby.
When our dd was little she would only poo once a week (and it happened to always be on Fridays!! ) She would be pretty cranky by the end of the week, but a few months down the track she grew out of it.

i think constipation is technically when they go, but it's only hard little pellets, if that makes sense? i know that my DS got to a point (around your DD's age) where he no longer went every day (or more like every nappy change!) & he'd get really irritable once it got to anything more than a few days & then it'd hit! i'd say - get ready for the next number 3!!

    Thanks all

Still no sign of No 3's...

Jaida seems to be fine though. She is quite happy on her tummy and kicking around on the floor. Will just cover us well when we feed cause that is when she normally goes. I hope she doesn't hold on until Wed.. thats when we are catching a flight home..... imagine No 3's on the plane aaaarrrrgggghhh

Pretty much anything goes for a BF baby, unless it's like water or hard pellets like Sloane said...

Right from birth DD2 used to go 7 - 10 days betwen poos - and she would cry heaps too, when doing them even though they weren't really hard - then at 3-4 mths she got a little more regular, and since starting solids she is much more... productive...

ETA - oh I do hope it doesn't happen on the plane! good luck...
