I am really hoping some of you Mummies out there can help me... My poor darling has been battling with really bad constipation over the last month or so and it is so traumatic and stressful for all of us seeing him screaming and crying as he does a really hard poo. DH even usually has to push his legs against his tummy to help him get it out - I think it's gotten to the point that he's refusing to go anymore he is breastfed by the way.
We have tried changing his diet, adding more liquids (he refuses water 99% of the time which is soo hard), giving prune/pear juice, massages, baths, leg cycling... You name it!
I'm just hoping to hear from anyone who may have been through this before what has helped you. I really don't want to medicate him (I don't want him to get dependent). And it got to the point at one stage that we had to use suppositories, but he since has gone by himself, but with difficulty. I don't want to keep doing that (and have stopped).
Thanks in advance for your help!

Go to the dr. This needs to be addressed ASAP. The not wanting to medicate far outweighs the need for this to be treated and the medical issues it could cause. IMhO.
Have been to homeopath, chemist etc and he manages to do a few normal poos and then gets constipated again. It's ever since he started eating heaps of solids.
I realise the doctor is my only option if I can't do something about this soon... but I came on here to get opinions and try other things as a last resort before I take that trip, as we have just moved and i have NO idea of a good GP around here.
It sounds as if you have tried all the right things and if they are not working, you may be dealing with a more chronic constipation issue. MN is right it is time for further action and there are treatment options which are gentle and will not lead to dependancy. Your gp or pharmacist should be able to help you out, rest assured this is easily treated when you have the right advice I went through similar with my dd and it turns out to be quite common. Distressing, yes, but common.
Unfortunately it took me a few gps to get answers as not all are great with knowledge about the difference between toddlers and adult type constipation. Great that you are getting on to this early as MN is correct that it can lead to a lot more distress if not sorted out.
