Not every government professional ie every public hospital medical professional is pushing a government cart. It can difficult to sort through biased opinions sites that appear to be your friend (from either end of the spectrum ) turn out to be antsy should speak against their platform.

Oh and you can't get the flu from flu vaccines- how long will this old chestnut drag on?

As for not getting the flu from the swine flu vaccine I do not believe it one bit. Of the 20 odd people I know who have had the vaccine they have ALL had the flu symptoms after (sore muscles, head cold, runny noses, lethargic). A bit like not getting a rash from the chicken pox vaccine right? Well plenty of people will beg to differ on that one. :rolleyes:

Swine flu vaccine has not been tested enough, simple as that.

What about the rotavirus vaccine controversy? Do you want a separate thread for that as well? The discussion here is about why it is hard to find unbiased research about the safety and efficacy of vaccines, and the gardasil and rotavirus vaccines are very good examples of exactly why current vaccine research is not. They are relevant to this discussion.

You can get "flu-like symptoms". And if you don't seroconvert, most people tend to have their fluvax just as flu season is kicking off anwyay, so that is when they are most likely to catch the flu. It's easy to see how the lay-person might not be able to tell the difference.

Says who? People looking for answers needing someone to blame? All deaths are sad and in grief many look for answers. The Gardasil debate continues with just as many valid experts supporting it use that aren't on the take. Deaths from Gardasil? In the monologe a woman who was given the vaccine, died from a gunshot wound. Her death was recorded in the reportable deaths and quoted for Heaven's sake. So now Gardasil casues gunshot wounds! This is the brains trust trying to scare us out of the vaccine!!!

Then you believe that. I happen to not. I have been vaccinated without side effects. Flu like symptoms isn't the flu. whne you get a vaccine your body reacts and produces an immune response. I get tired when I am thrown untruths and pople don't read ALL the information only that that is relevant to their argument.

I have the vaccines to protect my family from what I encounter at work.

The things is with causes....if you yell loud enough, people will hear you. Yell louder and they might actually believe you.

Except they publish outdated & incorrect information. If they were truely prochoice, they would be portraying the risks of vaccinations against non-vaccinations.

They simply state in one sentence: these are some the outcomes of the disease. Then they parade old/dated information (anything from the 20s to the 70s - rarely anything younger - that's 40 years old at best!!), and news paper articles from The Sunday Times!!! Not the most credible of sources, and even those newspaper clippings are from 2000 - already 10 years old, and written by a journalist. :wall::wall: Out of the 5 references listed on page (the only page with with references from this century!), 40% were from newspaper articles.

None of that gives you balanced or well analysed information. So in a way, AVN give me the serious cranks because they pretend to be something they are very much NOT!

If you genuinely believe the science of medicine has not changes since the 1920s (or even the 1970s) then it's a great website. But I will NOT use 90 (NINETY!!!) year old information to base decisions of health for my children when there are plenty up-to-date studies out there that still cannot find an evidentiary link to much of what has been claimed.

It's your choice - but make it an informed one!

Hi I had many concerns against getting it done and getting it done...and in the end getting it done won out in the end so we all went down last weekend to have it the whole family done.

DH is going overseas in a weeks time so wanted to get it done before he left and while every one was well with having such a large family...

My nephew is 16 a he has asthma and he also got sick with the swine flu last year my sister asked her DR if he had already been sick with the swine flu should he get the injection for it also and she was told yes....

So all in all I am glad that I got and and my family but it is a decision that you will have to make what is best for you and your family.....

In a nutshell, the first generation rotavirus vaccine was fast-tracked through FDA approval, in a similar way to the way Gardasil has been. They published adverse events data that showed it was safe. After its introduction, a significant increase in the number of babies who suffered intususception (a potentially fatal bowel condition) in the week following the administration of the rotavirus vaccine occurred - so significant, in fact, that they had to withdraw it from the market. They have since introduced a second generation vaccine, which they have fast-tracked to market to replace the first one, that purportedly doesn't have intususception as a side effect.

I have looked after one baby in the last year who had intususception several days after their rotavirus vaccine, and another who was never confirmed as an intususception, but who had all of the symptoms a few days after their rotavirus vaccine. I suspect it may still be a potential problem.

I'm subscribing on the off-chance we get closer to answering the OP's question as I would like more information too.

My ob has advised against the swine flu vaccination. Can't remember why TBH as we'd just finished discussing Tony Abbott versus Joe Hockey and my mind was still concentrating on that.

A paediatrician friend of mine, however, said it was advisable. Can't remember why TBH as we were at a Thai restaurant at the time and I was savouring the pad thai.

Evidently the only thing I know about vaccines is that I'm more interested in politics and food.

But I should make an informed choice.

I will see what official literature I can find about the H1N1 vaccine and link here, but it won't be until tonight.

One thing I do know off the top of my head that concerns people - it contains thiomersal. The seasonal flu vaccine does not.

I *think* I read somewhere too that it contains the highest level of mercury in a current vaccine. Don't quote me though.

It doesn't contain mercury per se, but it contains the thiomersal which is very similar to mercury.

And given that thiomersal has been eliminated from most modern vaccines, it probably does contain much higher levels of thiomersal than most vaccines.

The production methods for prefilled syringes is complex from a logistical pointof view. To ensure adequate quantities or vaccine were available in a timely manner, multi-use vials were chosen. Multiuse vials generally contain a preservative- in this case thimerosal as a mercury derivative. The vials must then be used within 24 hours.

The pedi doses were released later once established that the vaccine safe and by this stage they could come up with single use syringes which don't contain a preservative.

I appreciate the hesitation for pregnant women and the vaccine so at least look towards other adults and susceptible others at least being vaccinated so providing a of resistance barrier to protect yourself. Good hygiene is essential.

I know it's easy to become complacent even dismissive when threats don't appear to amount to much, however flu viruses have had a habit of coming back in alternate strains. It not necessarily widespread deaths that is a worry as opposed to widespread incapacitation of society and infrastructure inluding overloading medical and emergency services that can occur with pandemic

As the OP I am happy to be reminded about the Gardasil & rota virus vaccine problems. Both were fast tracked & both had not so great out comes.

I am guessing though that quite a few people have had the H1N1 vaccine. I've personally not heard any negative stories about side affects or problems with babies born after the pregnant mother recieved the vaccine as yet.
If any one has any more info on this I would appreciate a link to that as well :)

TBH in my personal experience government organisations are pro vax as I don't think they do have a choice. Sure they can't force you, but I know that MCHNs are not allowed to give their personal view on vaccinating, or even say thats your choice. They have to give you the pro vax speil. Which makes it harder again for a mother to make an informed decision IMO. When you can't get professional advice you want IYKWIM.
