i just went through DD's hair and found what looks to be nit eggs!!
she's only 16months i didnt think i had to worry about nits till she was older and in school or something arghh, she hasnt got much hair and its really fine, ive gone through it all and got rid of all of them i think.
is there anything more i can do to prevent this from happening again
im going to wash all the sheets and blankets and everything shes been in contact with, is there anything i can use ?
I used to get lice all the time at school, no joke, it was constant! What worked best for us was to put very diluted tea tree oil (not sure of the exact amount, 10mls or something? To 500 mls water, it's pretty strong smelling stuff so you dont want too much) in a spray bottle and spray my hair each morning and brush it through. The lice hate the tea tree oil and for the most part stayed away. It does sting if it gets in your eyes though so you've gotta be a bit careful.
HTH
DD got head lice when she was about 6 or 7 months old I think...I was devastated! Lol. I washed her hair (and mine...realised why my head was itching like crazy ) with this stuff called "Quit Nits" from the supermarket. I picked out as many eggs as I could from DD's hair, and gave mine a really good comb. I couldn't pick them out of my hair though, because it's really thick and long and it's kinda hard to do it to your own hair! I washed our hair again a week later with it and they were pretty much all gone. I think I only washed all the sheets once during the week.
I'd just make sure that you give your hair a treatment too, because chances are if your DD has them you may have them too.
1mL tea tree oil to your 100mL water will do it. Alternatively, if Thursday Plantation still sell a tea tree shampoo, you can just use that.
I had them a while ago - ewwwww, I know! Never usually get them, but now that I'm preggas, apparently I'm a bit more habitable! Anyway, all I did was wash my hair once a week with a bar of tea tree soap, and they're gone. I even had my hairdresser check before she put any of her tools near my head, and she couldn't find anything. It's amazing stuff.
We had our first bout a few weeks ago now - almost 4 years before we experienced it and DS has long hair that, until then, was left out and loose at creche, playgroup, kindergym etc.!
Anyway, after doing the initial Quit Nits treatment, purchase of an electric comb and using oils/conditioner, I can say that I think the nightly application of the conditioner/olive oil/tea tree/lavender/naiouli essential oils blend covered with a shower cap for an hour then a combing was what kicked it for us. DS now has his hair ina low plait with some wispy bits hanging near his eyes to keep him happy.
As well as the diluted tea tree you can put some hairspray in her hair whenever you go near other kids, it helps prevent the lice from being able to lay their eggs on the hair shaft because the can't stick to it. And if her hair is long enough, put it up in a tight ponytail or plait, though being so little I assume it's not that long yet!
