talking at 12 months

so we were just chatting today (hubby and me) and we realised that Miss M doesn't say any words at all.
non mum, bub, nan, dad nothing.
she just grunts and groans, she just gets very upset and yells at you

she will point to something and grunt if she wants it.

we get ahhhh and babble which makes no sense, it can't even be translated into english lol

should we be worried?

We were talking about this at mother's group on Friday as all the kids (15-16 months are saying quite a lot of words now) but the only boy in our group isn't saying much at all. It turns out he has a tongue tie which apparenty has been affecting his speech all along! It should help a lot once it's been snipped.

Our nephew was only grunting at 12 months too. He's only just recently started saying a lot more and he turned two in September! We think his older brother (who is 5) spoke for him a lot of the time, IYKWIM. Another friend had issues with her DD just grunting and pointing until she was 3. She's been seeing a speech pathologist for the past year and her speech has improved out of sight. If you're worried I'd speak to your MCHN or a paed though but I think often it's just kids doing things at their own pace.

I wouldn't be too worried just yet I don't think? Eden can say mum, bub and dad, and tries to say hello, bye and jagger (the cat) but thats about it? And thats only recently that its got quite clear, before that its just babble!

yeh im just worried as she is doing so many other things. but has made no effort to communicate.

I will ask the doc when i get her 12 month needles done.

I wouldn't be too worried just yet, you mentioned she is doing other things. Babies tend to focus more on one area of development at a time, for some they talk sooner others may walk early, for example. So it may just be that she's practicing her motor skills at the moment and she'll move onto communication after that.

DS didn't say very much (he said Mum and Dad but they didn't seem to mean anything to him) until he was just over one, then all of a sudden something clicked and he now has about 25-30 words.

What's her hearing like? Does she seem to understand some things when you speak to her? Respond to loud noises, etc?

yeh hearing seems fine.
she reacts to loud noises, responds, understands the words your saying.
Just doesn't say anything back.
