What have you done or paid for with a slab/case of beer?
I was just laying down with DS for his morning nap (and a much needed 2nd sleep me) when I woke up to the sound of a truck. I got up and thought I'd see the block next door getting cleared for building but instead I saw a truck delivering heaps of dirt to our next door neighbour and right when I looked I saw our neighbour go around a put a slab of beer in the passenger side of the truck. And it got me thinking about good ol' Aussie 'mateship' and how truely wonderful it is to get almost anything done for a slab of beer! And just the gesture of offereing to pay with a slab of beer encourages mateship and goodwill all round
On the same train of thought I also see loads of friendly bartering in our community with other goods and services. So please tell me what you've done or paid for with a slab of beer or any other lovely batering deals you have with others.
Love the good old carton currency, we got our cot, portable, bouncer and nursing chair from various people for carton payments! I used to fix mates cars for cartons too, tho havnt done much of that since about 5 months pg. Then theres bbq n beer payments for helping or being helped to move house or build something... We also swap eggs and veggies from the garden for stuff from friends gardens, between us all we can almost keep the crisper stocked (except for the cold weather fruit n veg) it's a great system!
Yep I love the beer and bbq payment. I think for house #2 we will ask all of our friends over to help out doing the garden for beer n bbq! I also wish I had veggie and fruit to swap with that would be the best! again house number 2 wil have a huge beggie garden and fruit trees YUM
i've never paid for any plumbing supplies - nor have my parents from when we moved when i was 6 - one of our neighbours is the supply manager at a plumbing place. he won't accept anything at all, so once a year (we space them through the year) he gets a slab from each of us. when my hot water service died, i paid cost price for the actual service, but the labour was free (from his employees - his boss doesn't care). Got the whole house changed from Gal to copper pipe, with water filters etc when i first moved in - didn't pay for any of it. he wouldn't let me!
have helped many people move for a slab.
i did all the invites/place cards etc for an (ex) friends wedding for a slab of cruisers (she didn't pay - it was not the reason we are no longer friends lol)
We tend to have a Bundy currency around here as most of hubby's friends are bundy drinkers...
although... DH is helping a friend with some landscaping - and we have massage currency for that one! two hours of DH working means a one hour massage for one of us - sweeeeeeeeeet!
While we were away, my Dad's dog got out while DH was working, and a man took it in rather than surrendering it to the RSPCA. He took it to the RSPCA to check for microchipping, and called us. When I said that Dad and I were away, and DH was working, he took the dog home to look after it for us, so we took him a carton of beer for his generosity (although I think he wants to keep the dog, LOL)
DH got 2 gas tanks for cars for a carton of beer each.
Actually... I now have to organise a smashing down of fence and moving of retaining wall and digging of holes... I think I'll create a FB event and invite everyone to bring sledgehammers and I'll supply beer...
The Man got a six pack (can you believe it?!?!?!) for ME picking up his enormous bulldog off the side of the road and taking it back to work. I mean, this gorgeous big boy, I spent more than ten minutes getting him into my car (a tradie ended up giving the dog his whole lunch and picked him up and put in the very back of my little Pulsar (no, the kids were at daycare that day!). A very head-shy dog, obviously not worth a whole lot to this guy. He didn't even sound thankful! Oh, and please don't misconstrue that as I think we should have got more grog. Just a genuine sounding thank you would have been nice.
Hmm, what else, car work sometimes.... Dammit, what else have we spurred on the economy with???
We get mulch delivered at the moment. We do them a favour as it is poor quality, so they can't sell it, the slab is mostly for the fact they deliver it. Getting the septic cleaned out only costs a slab.
I used to make 4 slab a day on saturdays!
I washed/trimmed/plaited horses for competitions.
They were clients horses and nice people and I didnt like to charge them so they would all buy me grog. LOL
I also got lots of movie money and vouchers too.
I always buy slabs at xmas for my leather suppliers, as alot of my stuff is from interstate, it pays to keep the people who are choosing the hides on side.
A slab goes along way in the goodwill stakes...
My hubby used to be a furniture removalist for 8 years and every day he'd bring hope either a slab or a few 6 packs that customers had given him as tips not to mention ssoooo much furniture!
my dads mate helped us move into here for a bottle of chivas regal.
i remember paying my cousion half a slab of jimmy black and his mate half a slab of caronas once, but cant quiet remember what for...
Ah yes the Tooheys beer-economy lol its definately alive and well in our house!!! Hubby is a mechanic and will often do weekend work for beer.....helping move is always beer n bbq......umm whatelse.....Ive paid beer for babysitting (they got the beer the next day not while babysitting lol)...hubby and his mates are very keen PS3 players and they will pay each other in beer to get them past levels they are stuck in lol
