Yep mine was sent away for testing, not because I requested it, but because I had an extra bit of placenta on my placenta! It was all ok though, just an extra bit. My ob gave me the results when I was still in hospital.
It is pretty standard for it to be sent to pathology... If you don't want this or you want it given back to you you can request that. Planting yours and your childs placenta under a tree can be a nice way to celebrate the birth connection you both had...

Blood was taken from the cord at the time too and I was told those results within an hour after he was born, but I just wondered if you're ever given any results from the placenta testing.
Generally placentas are only tested for specific reasons eg if liquor was smelly or placenta is smelly, extra bits, or other medical reasons needing testing.
A lot of hopsitals will take cord blood for research purposes and some hospitals have the cord blood collections for cord blood banks.
