Babies born face up- posterior

did it make labour longer and harder?

40w 2d and bubs is face up today, i have no doubt she will go back to face down (i hope anyway lol) but just thought id ask how your experience was.

My DD was born posterior after a 23.5 hour labour. I had the worst back pain, i was screaming through each contraction and pushing took 1 hour and 45 mins. At one point there was talk of a c section because they didnt think i could do it.

Umm, honestly? Bloody painful! The back pain was excruciating. I honestly thought something was seriously wrong, I have NEVER experienced anything like it. DH described me as a possessed cat arching it's back in anger/fear! The contractions I had in my belly seemed mild compare to my back pain. I was trying for a drug free labour but I just couldn't cope with the back pain in the end. I had been in labour for about 6 hours when I had my epi and I was 9cm by then so despite all the pain, my labour progressed really well and fast for a first timer.

I had a lot of amniotic fluid so DD actually turned back and fourth during labour and got stuck in a posterior position on her way out. After nearly an hour of pushing with still no head on show and horrendous back pain again (my epi had worn off so I could feel the pushing sensation), my OB realised DD was stuck and needed urgent help to get out. My epi was topped up, I was put in the stirrups and my OB turned DD then she was vacuumed out in 3 pushes.

I was in labour for 9 hours all up, the epi certainly slowed things down, but I had a brilliant labour really and no tearing at all. DD did have a fabulous cone head from all the headbutting inside me and the vacuum but it was fine within hours and normal within days.

I hope your LO turns as a posterior birth is not something I'd wish upon another woman.

2 of my 5 were this way. Other he the pain being different & crowning a bit more difficult, I found them no different really. My 2nd (1st posterior) was 14 hours of active labour. My 5th (2nd posterior) was 3 hours.

Wow thanks for that girls, i really hope bubs was just saying hi, and will go back face down, im sure she will, i have had all my births with back labours, and they were painful enough, not sure i want the extra pain. lol

I have had 2 OP births and I never felt them in my back like you are 'supposed' to. They weren't alot different to my first two births really. THe only thing with my last one that I found hard was that he turned right at the last minute as he was crowning which made it very hard to push him out. Those births were only 4.5 and 6 hours long - so very hard and very intense but nothing I'd say I'd hate to do again.

DS was posterior too and I had a 55 hour labour ... from thursday to sunday... It was all in my back, I actually did something weird to my spine whilst giving birth and had to have my whole back realigned and hips...

Hopefully this bub isnt posterior too Hope your bub turns for you ....

DD2 was OP - was a 4 hour labour and whilst crowning was tricky I would much prefer that to the induced labour of DD1. xx

YES! OMG my mum and my DP said that i looked like i wanted to jump out of my skin! They said i kept arching my back with every contraction! I wanted a completely drug free birth i am so upset that i gave in to morphine but i said no to anything else so im proud of that. It is the worst pain ever and i hope to NEVER experience it again or if i do that its not for very long.

My 3rd was OP and i had no back pain at all but my labour was longer then my 2nd
i couldnt say about birth as things got hectic at the end and he was removed by vacuum (had nothing to do with being OP) but it was painful
i also had no pushing sensation
before things got hectic the midwifes were going to get me to change positions to turn him

I've just seen your tread Lisa! Bubs wasn't actually posterior she is anterior its just because she was looking to the side which is normal and even though he had the doppler on top it was at an angle and so that's why it was getting her face straight on. Sorry, I feel bad you didn't understand that properly, I'm guessing you couldnt understand the dr and he wasn't explaining it very clearly but thats definitely what he said so thats a relief..no posterior baby!

Dont feel bad hun, i dont think i took in anything today, he was hard to understand, and with the kids playing around, thats why i am glad i have u there, i dont think he quite explained it to me properly either, i saw her face and i know they should be face down, so got a bit worried, so just wanted to ask how others went.

Anila, my best bit of advise is to try to not focus on it. if you go into labour expecting the worst because of the position of the baby then it will seem harder. With my 5th bub, I actually thought he was well positioned. When my DH asked teh MW she just said, this is baby #5 any position is a good one. But I could tell, I said to her during labour that it felt different, its was weird. Short intense bursts. Sure enough he was posterior. But it really made little difference to his birth. he still came out LOL
