    Placenta pills

    Anyone done this?
My midwife said they make up little balls and pop them in the freezer, then you can just swallow them with water like a pill. No taste.... right?

I've never heard of that... Who takes them? You or bubs? What's the benefit?

    Me In theory
Eating the placenta is supposed to be great for PPH. Also for avoiding PND and just generally aiding in your recovery - lots of lovely goodies in the placenta.
I'm a bit, erm, unsure if I could just eat it as is, you know? Thought maybe frozen pills might be doable.

I always thought it was dried & crushed into a powder to go into capsules?

I really wanted to do this, had the cutting board, pill boxes and knife all ready, our lovely doula was going to prepare it for me, and it didn't happen. We all examined the placenta really closely and it was really grainy and 'exhausted' as they all put it, and I decided not to. It's been in my freezer since then though!

Anyways, sorry, that wasn't your Q. Apparently it's common to chop it into small pieces then freeze it, and there can be a metallic taste, but drinking it with OJ can help if you don't like the taste. Good luck with it!

I've heard of the chop into teeny pieces & freeze and the dry, crush & insert into capsules methods... so both similar to what your midwife is saying. Personally I just can't get my head around it no matter how good it would be. But then, I don't eat any meat so I have an issue with flesh in general. I think in principle it's a great thing to do!

My acupuncturist (who is also a doula) was telling me about this. She said she had one in her fridge which she was taking to someone to dry and then crush into tablets. She said it has to be dried asap after the birth.
