Question for those who had an induction first then a natural labour

I am just trying to work out if the length of time for a second natural labour will be comparable to a first induction (hmmm....doesn't make sense)

I had an induction with my first child and he was a 6 hour labour from start to finish. I have heard that second labours are usually shorter, but does that apply if you had an artificial labour first?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I was induced with the drip for first labour (9 hours), second labour was 6 hours (natural).

    My first two were early inductions; ds1 was 38wks & 3hrs, ds2 was 37wks & 90mins.

My last was spontaneous bang on my due date, 2hr1min. Easiest labour by far!

So my non-induced was shorter than my longest labour but not the shortest overall.

My first labour was 4 hours from starting the drip to delivering the placenta (induced). Second labour... well, I'm not sure of the *exact* timing as I don't know what counts as labour, but the business end of things was also very quick. I was 2cm dilated three days before I went into *actual* labour, and was having contractions from about 5pm Saturday afternoon, but I didn't go to hospital until 4am Sunday morning when I was at 9cm and my waters still hadn't broken. Once I had ARM at 10cm, it was very, very quick - bub was born at 7:37am Sunday morning.
Personally, I really only count my 'labour' as starting once I hit 10cm because before that it just felt like Braxton Hicks. Maybe because with my first labour, I didn't have *anything* happen until my waters were broken for me - I went from 1cm to 10cm in less than twenty minutes.

First birth - OB broke waters and inserted drip etc at 7.30 am. Baby born at 1.46 pm.

    - 6 hrs and 16 mins (Induction)

Second birth - Show at 6.30 am, contractions built up throughout day, 6.00 pm exactly - waters broke, 8.00 pm got to hospital, Baby born at 9.53 pm.

    - Just over 15 hrs from when i had my show or 3 hrs and 53 mins from waters breaking (All Natural)

My 1st labour was induced at 37weeks it was an 18.5hr labour

My 2nd labour was natural 7hrs 15mins exact from the tiniest tiniest first niggle to birth but more like 4/5hrs of really good labour.

I think it can be very hard to guess what will happen but usually your 2nd labour will be shorter anyway, if it is longer it is more likely to be slowly getting into it you are very unlikely to have that full on labour for longer than you did with your first. And one thing is for sure natural labours are sooo much easier than induced.

DS1 I had gas, epidural, tears and stitches and managed to avoid c/s by the skin of my teeth, and only because I asked for more time and the epidural bought down my bp and ds's heartrate.

ds2 completely drug free, I felt very in control, knew what was happening, and was telling the midwives exactly what stage I was at, tear free and ds2 was 10lbs 5oz, I didn't actually even try to push, my body was just pushing itself and I wasn't and couldn't control it, 2nd stage with ds2 was about 5mins compared to ds1 2.5hrs!

I know that things are different for everyone I am just trying to explain the massive difference I had between induced and natural labours, it is amazing!!!

My first labour was induced, labour was 10hrs (from waters breaking) I had gel.
My second labour was not induced, and lasted 5hrs from when I woke from contractions, and 1hr 10min after waters broke.

Great question!! Thanks for asking it. I was thinking about it this morning in the shower (who knows why) because I was induced with my first and want to try to avoid for my second so its good to know it could be shorter and better!!

Haha oh yeah, what Oorki said. Second (natural) labour was technically longer, but was much, much more pleasant than my induced labour!

I'm SOOOOO glad I found this thread!!!
I had an 18 hour labour with DD - syntocin induced and want to do everything to avoid that with the baby.
I'm so glad to hear others had positive experiences.

My 2nd labour was pure bliss as well. Drug free, I was so in control of it all, and absolutely loved it!
