I thought it had something to do with hypnobirthing originating in the US, while calmbirthing was the Aussie-fied version. Could be wrong though.
As far as I know they are both on the same train tracks.
I did hypnobirthing - terrific stuff!
ETA: Hypnobirthing is essentially self-calming and relaxation techniques which aim to break the fear = pain cycle. It is incredibly empowering, educational and gives the birthing parents (well, mum) confidence in a woman's ability to birth naturally. I couldn't say I ever got into a true state of hypnosis, but I don't know that that's what the course is about - probably more on relaxation and visualising. H'birthing also gives you the tools to thrive (probably the best word - handle/manage isn't quite what I want to convey) during your birth. Our hypnobirthing teacher didn't harp on about having natural, drug-free birth - as she said "it's your informed choice". So there's no tut-tutting or pressure if you're of the mind that you'd do you best to have a natural birth, but if you feel like having pain relief, then of course that's fine because it's YOUR choice. Hypnobirthing also teaches the parents to prepare and accept any unexpected turn your birthing may take - obviously not all births are straight-forward. As for me, my births weren't long ones (about 7 hours start-finish), were uncomplicated and I birthed naturally without drugs or intervention. I definitely credit hypnobirthing with giving me the tools to focus, relax and achieve the births I wanted.
