    the birth of Hamish

    hi everyone.

just thought i would post my birth story on here, more as a guide for anyone who is to have a c section, and to tell my pregnancy story too!!

after 5 months of trying, we finally fell pregnant. i couldnt believe that i was pregnant and kept doing tests just to make sure. we found out our due date was the day before our first wedding anniversary and we were pretty excited. we chose to go private as we had the cover so we thought we would use it.

i had a pretty uneventful pregnancy right up until my 20 week scan which revealed a possible complete placental previa (placenta completely covering the cervix). then everything started to happen. i started getting swelling of hands, feet and ankles from 16 weeks, which got worse after 21 weeks. Then when i was 28 weeks i went into pre-term labour and ended up in the hospital for a few hours. not long after that i started spotting. i called my ob and he said that it pretty much confirmed my placenta was completely covering the cervix and would send me for another ultrasound to confirm this. in the meantime, my challenge test came back high and i had to go for the tolerance test for gestational diabetes. my scan at 31 weeks confirmed a grade 4 placenta previa and also said that i had polyhydranimos (excess fluid around the baby). baby was also measuring 3 weeks ahead of what he should have been too. the tolerance test came back high also and i ended up with gestational diabetes on insulin. my ob also discovered my blood pressure to be rising during this time.
i was due to finish work at 34 weeks but ended up finishing at 32 and a half weeks as i was getting strong braxton hicks during work and tiring easily. my ob wanted to admit me to hospital at 35 weeks to monitor me due to all of the above. but decided against it as my blood pressure was coming down and he was happy with me.
so when i was 34 +1 weeks, i had a bleed of 50mls. we called our ob who told us to go straight to the womens and childrens hospital. so we did and they admitted me until he was to be born by c section. during this stay they did another ultrasound and discovered i also had vasa previa where one of his blood vessels was extremely close to the cervix also. but at 34 + 3 weeks i had another 50mls bleed so that night at 650pm my little man was born. they also diagnosed me with pre-eclampsia during my stay in hospital too.
he was 2.71kg, 47.5cm long with a head circumference of 35cm. he was put into the special care nursery where he stayed for 2 weeks as he needed to develop his sucking reflex before we could take him home. he had a tube down his nose to his stomach where they fed him 3 hourly and i would also try and breastfeed him in this time too.
he finally came home last monday and we are so happy he is home now.
so thats my story. very long but at least he is here safe now.
