This is my birth story hope you enjoy
In advance i warn you of the swearing so if your easily offened dont read. We got pregnant very easily. I just have to get in the bath after Ash and wizz bang im up the duff!!! I found the first trimester easy lucky for me cause it was about to get hard maybe my body sub consciously knew??? i hardly had any morning sickness and i worked as an aged care nurse until a week before i had the baby so I felt very blessed. The oldies would loudly chat about how fat i had become haha love how they dont care, so obviously i never lost the fat look unfortunatly I only had one weird food craving for vegimite on meat pies and i ate it every day I tried to eat in private but did find that hard ended up spending my lunch breaks eating in my Corolla, just to avoid the stares.
At our 18 week ultrasound we found out our baby had a birth defect called Gastroschisis (Baby will be born with its intestine outside its body), We got told the baby was a girl 99.9% which surprised us we always thought the baby was a boy even been calling it him since we found out. Turns out we were told the wrong sex, which is apparently common in Gastro baby's. We had a boy 100% lol
Being my/our first pregnancy and not knowing what to expect helped me feel like i handled the situation pretty well. We took it all in stride and tried to take it one week at a time. There was no tears just long conversations. We were offered a termination and me and my partner after much research decided to go through with the pregnancy. Whats a little bit of guts out between family after all?
Its was so hard to know what to expect especially when the doctors and ultrasound techs just say we will have to wait to see how bad it is when he's born. I did find out the average gastro stay for bubs in America is 3 weeks however in Australia where i live its 2mnths.
I had to birth 6 hrs from home thats right i said SIX cmon Australia get with the program its Coffs Harbour for f sake not like im out there in the sandy middle of regional Australia. So i was booked in for an induction and earlier due to condition of bub. Our doctors told us it would be better if I birthed my son rather than a Cesarean. To be honest I felt like 'What I have been through all this pregnancy the stress, worry and heart ache and you want me to push this thing out?'. I know that sound stupid but i just was a tad scared of a little inside out monster ripping through my privates.
I had fortnightly ultrasounds 6hrs away from where we live from week 30. That was hard but we made it through. Me and Ash were so scared and had no idea what was to come, we had terrible images in our heads of alien babys screaming doctors and fears of the baby not making it. Spoiler alert: We made it out with a totally healthy and normal baby boy.
THE BIRTH
At John Hunter Hospital Newcastle on the 29/03/09 I was induced at 36 weeks, The first day I went in at 8am, Ash by my side (little pale but by my side.) At 1pm finally in floats the Transylvanian barbie doctor, and her two students. She explains that my cervix is not favorable (surprise to me as she hasnt even looked down there), then explains how they have to use balloons to start induction. I dont know what this method is called never her of it but if its offered to you PLEASE dont do it!!! So for your TMI they put these balloons up and pry open the cervix by inflating them with water all the while doing this saying in her vampire voice open you legs wider wider, Marijke wider ummmm sure thing but that f-ing hurts, f-u barbie doctor go slaughter a goat or something. I had some monitoring as contractions started but they only went for about half an hour but they were painful. Baby is ultrasound and lungs checked for maturity, we were told he was aprox 6pounds. She tells me that I can go home and return tomorrow for an Oxytocin drip.
Me and Ash quickly book a fancy hotel room and stay close to the hospital it was our last night before the big show so we relaxed and watched some movies. No contractions and i had a relatively good sleep well as good as u can with a football star carrying on inside.
The next morning we returned to the hospital for the baby to arrive were excited and hopeful, mum turned up aswell thank christ dont think i could of done it without her there she is one of those people that gets me what i want when i want and doesnt care who's toes are hurt in the process lol and during labour that was looked favorably on. I was placed on the drip of Oxytocin and contractions started quickly. I was monitored continually throught birth so I birthed on my back the entire pregnancy. The pain was at first controllable we would be happily chatting away and pause whilst contracting and then go back to the conversation. I continually was going to the toilet and the doctor came in and broke my waters and told me i was about 3-4 cm.
Contractions then came nice and steady 2-3 min apart. I was using the gas which i hated it made me feel woosy and out of body???? I was throwing up everywhere and hearing stange woman screaming in other room and sending out people to help her. Mum and Ash later told me i was the only one screaming well not screaming apparenly all the noises i made were long drawn out OOOOOWWWWWWWWW some what like a crow oh if the barbie vampire doc was in the room now!!!!!!!!!! I also kept on worrying that the car was parked in a terrible spot and that it wazs gonna cost way to much money. I think Ash may of left to get some food at that stage poor guy, he couldnt even eat it.
From what i remember i didnt like to be touched and dreaded the next contraction coming i was offered a spinal tap (epidural) which i gladly accepted about halfway through. I still was throwing up alot and saying confusing things. I always was happy to be induced and take anything that would help me through this pain!!!! The epidural was great in my opion it didnt take away the pain but helped me to relax in between contracions. I slept in between contractions and my father arrived with the sisters. Dad ended up in an argument with my midwife because she wouldn't let him stay in the room, he was escorted out of the area lol. Poor Ash and mum were both a mess at this stage they hated seeing me so helpless and i think its horrible only being able to watch.
I was finally checked and told I could start Pushing. The midwives and mum i think held up my legs and in came the army of doctors pediatricians and midwifes eleven people in total (told you it was a show) I pushed for 15 minutes and out came our beautiful son Lucas Griffiths at 9.20pm, with what looked like a kg of sausages on his stomach. He weighed 6 pounds 4 or 2992kg's. I didn't get to touch him before they whisked him away but i was prepared for that, my partner managed some sneaky photos, while he was being intubated before they left to take him to the NICU, just across the room, best of all i got to hear him cry.
It took me 9 hrs of full blown labour to have him not to bad if i do say so myself. Straight after Lucas had left the room i jumped or slowely dragged over my body for a well deserved shower with the help of my horrified Ash lol.Mum went to break the news to the family. I had a 3rd degree tear and retained placenta, which i ended up needing to have surgery to fix that night. Ash went to visit Luki and give me updates before I sent Ash away for a well deserved sleep he really was my rock through this pregnancy and birth i cant tell him that i love him enough.
The bad thing was it was 3am by the time i got back onto ward after a quick visit to the NICU, and a huge cry at his bedside, they had to drag me outta there. Lucas' bowel was all sqished back through the umbilical cord so he was all swollen and together before i had my first touch, HE was beautiful and perfict looked just like his daddy.
I was then put into a four bedroom room with woman that had their babys!!!!!!!!!! That sucked arse, especially because i was so emotional. I was moved that morning at 8am into my own room. I spent three days on ward before i couldnt stand it any more and moved to Ronald Mcdonald house with Ash by my side, luckily it was located in the hospital too.
Lucas ended up spending 4mnths in NICU- neonatal intensive care unit, but we have come home with a healthy happy and totally normal baby on formula and have never looked back. It was a roller coaster ride but were willing to do it again 4 more times if i get my way lol.
