    Talking Matthew Aaron's Birth

    Hello everyone

    Well, here's the story!

My original EDD was 27/7/09. As some of you know, I had my doubts that this was correct. In fact, I was sure it should be later. There is no doubt that by this date I was TOTALLY sick of myself and wanted to meet my little man. The Drs wanted to book me in for an induction on 5/8 which was 10 days after the EDD. I asked that they review the dates. Once they had they agreed that the were still fuzzy. I stated that I wanted him to choose his own birthday and was not willing to choose it. So, I made another OB's appointment for the week after and agreed that, if I was still pg, I would make an induction appointment.

Well, I made it to the next appointment and the induction was booked in for Thursday 13 August 2009. We had to be in there at 7:30am. I was still not happy about the induction, but had pretty much resolved myself to it. On Wednesday I was ensuring everything was in order, tying up loose ends and the likes. We went food shopping on Wednesday night and were ready for the next day.

We went to bed as per usual - BH in tow as ALWAYS!! At 2:35am I woke up with a strong contraction. I was so used to being woken up, I just ignored it and fell asleep again. Then, I was woken again at 2:55am with another one. I was suddenly aware of what was going on. I woke up my DH and said, I have a suspicion I'm in labour. I said that we would just lie there and wait and see what happened. THEN at 3:24am another one. This one made me get out of bed and walk it off. My DH's comment? "This looks familiar!"

I told DH to call the hosp and let them know about how far apart they were and how long they went. The mw said, "There's no need to come in yet, just relax and have a lie down and keep us informed." DH said, "This is our second one and the first was a four hour labour and the contractions changed extremely quickly. We may be coming in sooner than you think." She was agreeable to this and said come in when you need.

My next contraction was 2 minutes later and we knew it was serious. We waited 10 minutes and called back and told her we were coming in. My mum and dad were at our house ready to make sure our son was looked after. We drove to Berri in the hope we didn't hit a 'roo. My contractions were lasting for 1 minute and were 1 minute apart. She was ON!!!! I remember looking at the time on the way and it was 3:55am.

We got to the labour ward and I was thrown on the bed and it was ascertained I was 7 cm dialated and the baby was definitely coming. I had no urges to push yet, so I knew it could still be a while. Well, that didn't last long. Suddenly there I was shouting "I need to push." Another internal was done and it was found that Matthew was caught on the anterior lip and I had to try not to push because I could make it swell. I had to roll on my side and my back was furiously rubbed on every contraction. Still not to push. WHAT???? ARRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!! Suddenly, RELIEF!! They'd pushed him off the lip and I suddenly didn't feel like pushing anymore. I was told, "You still have to push, he's not out yet." "Oh, yeah, right. OK, we'll do that then." I then had to force myself to push him out and he was born. At 4:43am - 2 hours and 18 minutes from the first pain.

Because he was born so fast his lungs and guts were full of amniotic fluid and it took him about 2 days to cough it all up. I was told it's something that usually happens during labour.

Anyway, he's happy and healthy and very cute. We never made the induction.

Sorry Beema. Only just got around to reading BB again.

The fast labours are very intense. There is no resting between contractions and the contractions are very full on. Sure, it doesn't last long, but it's pretty extreme stuff. No time for any gas or anything, so there's no dulling any pain. I'm very lucky that I don't have to endure hours and hours though. I don't know which is worse. Let's face it labour - fast or slow - is PAINFUL!!!

The other unfortunate thing about fast labours is the gunk the poor baby has to get out for ages after. Long labours assist the baby in getting a lot of the gunk out before they're born, but with the really fast ones, they have to do it all by themselves later on. Poor Matthew was pretty distressed for a couple of days and just sounded like he was having full on choking fits. The mucous and garbage he choked up was pretty bad.

Daniel was bad enough on 4 hour labour - the 2 hour one did Matthew no favours. He's OK now though.

Oh I missed this the first time and was wondering where the heck you had got to and where your baby was! Congratulations on the quick arrival of Matthew! Perhaps he just needed the pressure of a deadline to get going?
