Red face My first child is finally here

    My Birth Story,

    Well, where do i start.

My PLAN :to have a happy and healthy baby

    1. Try to stay at home as long as possible.
    2. Try to dilate as much as possible by myself before intervention.
    3. Probably have a epidural.
    4. Be IN CONTROL!!!

    Here it goes,

I had contractions for 3 days prior, thinking things are getting started. Then on day 4, the Sunday morning, the day before my due date, I started getting stronger contractions about 8am. Lost my mucous plug, so my husband rang the hospital and they told us to come in because my contractions were 10mins apart. I started to panic realising what is about to happen. By the time we got to the hospital I was 6 mins apart. When we arrived my ob broke my waters then I said I wanted an epidural sometime so they wanted it done straight away. Once that was in they pumped me with the hormone drip and syntocin. If only I really knew what they did. One minute I was coping the next I was in agony I could not sit still. In 45 mins hour I went from 2cm to 9cm. They called my ob to come back, he was at the footy even though he already had left once to break my waters. My ob still hadn't arrived when I was 10cm dilated and I wanted to push. The midwife called him again and said if you are not here soon we will start without you. I started to cry feeling let down by my ob. It felt like I was intruding on his weekend even though I have paid lots of money to have him. I had gas during the contractions because the epidural didn't work below my belly I was in so much pain. The ob finally arrived and I wasn't allowed the gas to push. I struggled to get the head out it took me 2 hours to push my son out. My ob said if you don't get the head out in the next push I'll have to cut you and use the vacuum. I was like NO I didn't want that. My good friend who is a student midwife was there and she said I know you can do this I believe in you, and somehow I found this energy and pushed the head out. It took 2 contractions to push the rest of my son out and to be delivered by my beautiful husband, which made this awesome experience even more special. It was such a relief when he was out and put onto my chest. The pain was over and I'm a MUM!!!!! This whole day was a very painful but learning experience and I would definitely do things different next time but I have a beautiful baby son who is healthy and happy, and his parents who are over the moon and the pain was all worth it.

Another thing I wasn't happy with, was the midwife employed by the hospital - not the student midwife, was rushing too much post birth. All she wanted to do was get everything done, get Aston bathed, and get him in the crib before she finished work that night. Unfortunately I didn't get the bonding time I wanted to with him before his first bath, and would have liked to have a bit more time. I know they're there to do a job, and they see births everyday, but it would have been nice to have a bit more of a unique experience, and have things happen my way, as having a baby isn't a daily occurrence for me...
