My DD just turned 1, and doesn't really seem interested in drinking milk. She is fully breast fed, she did initially drink EBM but at about 2months old just preferred the boob. At 6 months she happily drank water from a cup and still does but just doesn't seem interested in drinking cow's milk. She has a little then moves on to something else. It's not the cup, we tried a couple of different ones, even the water cup.
What should i do. She loves cheese so is still getting calcium that way.
As bubs is BF and eating some dairy I would not stress, both my 3 year old and nearly 20 month old who are both still BF have only recently started drinking small amounts of cows milk. They do love cheese and yougurt so I make sure they have 3 serves a day of dairy that way and offer milk still at times in a cup if they drink good if not not a problem.
Drinking water is great thought.. My oldest hardly drani water until about 14 or 15 months.
I wouldn't be too worried to be honest, my 1yo doesn't drink milk either but she still gets her calcium from cheese and yogurt. My 3yo has never been keen on cows milk. It's not a necessity
I agree re the other comments in that if she is getting dairy from other sources. But something you may want to try if it is bothering you is watering down the cows milk. My first son didn't like the taste of cow's milk so I diluted it with water, gradually reducing the amount of water to milk. That being said he is now 6 and still isn't a huge milk drinker, so is just him as my second son lives on milk and dairy.
I second the other ladies. Even under 500ml of breast milk is giving almost 40% requirement of calcium at this age, more if she is drinking more than that. Cows milk is an option not a necessity. Cheese & Yogurt are options for extra dairy calcium and there are lots of non-dairy sources too. If you really want her to take cows milk from a cup or to wean her onto cows milk you could try adding a dash to her water, then a little more next time, and so on to try and accustom her to the taste.
Thanks so much ladies!
You have made me feel better. I will try the idea of watering down the milk. I started mixing EBM and milk but didn't go to well. She is only having 2breast feeds a day now that she goes to day care 3 times a week but eats cheese and yogurt there. So i think she will be ok.
Will keep trying.
My 3year old son loved cow's milk from since he was 1, so there you go. So different.
