BF bub but I think she needs a formula top up, recommendations?

There's a whole galaxy of supporters out here hoping/praying you had a better day - we hope you had a better night. these early weeks are tough. You know those TV sit-coms where they drive around the suburbs at night to get their baby to sleep? Well, yes, they have the same model as you (ie pretty normal baby) It's an endurance test. As others have said, you need to work as a team. One up/one down. He might take the late shift, and you get up early,(or vice versa) no point you both staying up. You've gotten a lot of great advice here. Do try to get our during the day - exposure to daylight helps her reset her clock, and a latte with your partner makes you feel more normal. It really, really won't be like this forever.

my bub is almost 3wks old and i just suffered the exact same thing, im also a BF mum for the first time i didnt BF my DS1 so this bf is new to me

i have seen a paed and all they have cared about is that he is eating properly wouldnt accept that i said i think he has reflux, i didnt know about silent reflux until reading this but thats exactly what my baby boy does, im getting told my milk might not have enough calories for him but i mean my bub is very small which is all there giving a **** about right now :(

im seeing my paed tomorrow and im going to say im pretty sure he has silent reflux and ask what i can do, i shall come back and let you know what im told

Just remember your not alone as im going through the same thing, not as bad but its still super frustrating constantly feeding and crying

my DF and i rotate shifts and when something works we remember it and just keep rotating things to keep him quiet

also laying bubs across your legs on her tummy and rubbing her back in circles or patting her back can ease pain of reflux (this works for my bub, for about half hour sometimes longer, then we do it again)

I love you ladies so much, thankyou all for the support & fantastic advice. We went to the GP today & he said to give her infacol which she has had. He wouldn't give me the referral which I'm a little annoyed about now. He said try the infacol first. On the suggestion of a friend I'm going to call the paed tomorrow & book an app as it could take a cpl weeks to get in & then I'll go back for the referral.
I'm also waiting on a call back from the sleep school.
My poor little girl, I feel so bad when she is crying and I can't soothe her, it really gets me down :(
Today she fed every hr n a half to two hrs & is asleep right now, praying she has a good night.
I really appreciate you all taking your time to respond to & support me.

isnt infacol for wind??? and i thought they could only have it from a month old

im glad shes sleeping right now, the pain of BF every hour and a half - two hours is a pain, mine does the same i feel like a milking cow

whatevayou did tonight to get her asleep remember it and repeatedly do it to keep her quiet

My little one got greater relief from Infant's Friend than Infacol, both are used to treat colic and wind. It worked best when i gave it to her before each feed. I used the minimum dose.

I'd be getting a second opinion re the reflux especially if you really feel she has the symptons, you know your baby best.

Try co-sleeping, some babies just aren't ready for the independence of sleeping on their own yet. She was warmed and comforted by your body for the last 9 months, so it can be a bit of a shock when it disappears. As other PP have suggested she could have days and nights mixed up, so keep days active and nights quite and dark, but some can sometimes also become comforted by the activities and sounds of the daytime and sleep better through this, and night time is quiet and dark become upset. DD1 was comforted at night by a lulluby cd I had that was set to the sound of a beating heart. Co-sleeping, or even having bubs bassinet right beside the bed, takes so much less energy for night feeds, even try to safely doze while feeding.

To me is sounds like Silent reflux, with the throwing up and swallowing red face, and it is horrible because unless the baby is phsycally thowing up the milk and out it can be undiagnosed. And it hurts as an adult so you can only imagine how painful it is for a baby, and they do come on and off again because the milk helps soothe, but unfortuately it creats a viscious cycle, and if it isn't reated it can lead to a raft of issues :(

DD has reflux, but it came on quickly and violent, to the point where she was chockin on her milk in her sleep, I literally had to sleep with he sitting upright until we had our Paed appointment, and she even began choking on her milk upright. She would literally scream the house down, read face, and very painful cry, and not be satisifed by the breast or anything else. We explained it all to our Paed who put her on Losec and very quickly we had a completely different baby, she was settled and much much happier, she is still throwing up, but it isn't hurting because the acids have been neutralized. But she is on an adult dosage :o, morning and night, because the 10mg once a day didn't last her all day, we are only just getting through the 12 hours with that dosage. We have Infant Gaviscon to use as well which should help with the vomiting, but I have tried it a couple of times but it didn't make much of a difference.

DD's basinett is also propped up on two towels so she isn't flat.

When she is screaming is she arching her back and more stretched out, rather then bringing her legs up to the front? TBH 7 hours seems like a lot for it to be a mix up of day and night.

Please seek an alternative opinion and when you speak with the Paeds, they can often get you in quicker, explain everything and how bad it is.

One thing I forgot to mention about the osteo/chiro is that it can also help with reflux or colic issues.

I hope this helps you out Babyluv. The more frequent feeding during the day is promising - I have my fingers crossed this means she'll have more sleep at night time.
Please know that you bring your baby so much comfort when you hold her, even when she continues to cry. You really are making a difference to her :hug:

Hi ladies,
We had a great night last night, bub woke 4hrly for a feed, I'm not sure if it's the infacol that has helped or that we just had a better night, she only cried for a little while and settled off to sleep. She seemed like a much happier bub. Baby steps though, we could have a terrible night tonight but at least we got some sleep last night.
Bub saw a chiro on tues.
I'm calling the paed today.
We have the rolled up towel in her bassinet, but she slept next to me last night. She hates her bassinet under the matress, the matress in it is super hard, is this usual?
She didn't cluster feed last night but had more day feeds yesterday.
Gosh I hope she has turned the corner! I'll keep you girls posted.

Yeah that sounds great, don't be disheartened though if it goes up and down for a little while, in the end it will work out good all the time. I found with both of mine they did not like there own basinette from around weeks 2 to 4, much preferred mummies and wouldnt have a bar to do with a cot till like 4 months. During the day we would use a portable rocker. The mattresses are meant to be rather firm, so they cant smush their faces into it, for SIDS safety.

That sounds like great progress hun. Great work!! As you say, that might not happen every night but it is still a great step forward and hopefully things seem a little easier today with some rest behind you. It sounds like the more frequent feeding during the day and/or the meds are helping so with any luck you are through the worst of it. It might make it easier now to get out more during the day and help reset that body clock with the sunlight too (ironically unless you are in Brissy as you would struggle to find sun atm!!).

That sounds great!! My little one hated her bassinet too as the mattress was also very hard. She slept in there one night and then we ended up co-sleeping!
