BFing status on FB - STUPID COMMENTS

By now most people will have seen the following status going around FB:

change your status to "I've done it in public and I'll do it again - I don't care who sees!" if you have ever breast OR bottle fed your baby in public! We shouldn't discriminate and babies should be able to eat comfortably in public, however the method.

So a friend and i started chatting about it and how she wishes she fed longer and how i want to get to 12mths with DD2... no problem.. then my cousin pipes up:

Thats cool but don't ever do it in front of me !!!!

Is he for real, i bf my DD1 infront of him once or twice, my cousins (his brother) wife had bf her son aswell.. they are TTC through IVF etc at the moment, does he think his wife wont BF in front of ANYONE but him?
I am so over stupid comments on these subjects.. so i wrote back (also he is a bit of a PITA commenting on ppl's status' just for kicks)

I fed Ava in front of you when she was little, P fed Z.. didn't realise you'd become a prude... rofl

So has anyone else done this status and had stupid comments, or had any BFing comments on FB etc???

Another friend just had a go back aswell saying she wont starve her kid and if ppl are having gross thoughts or are uncomfortable they are the ones with the issue, she doesn't even use a wrap... i posted back:

Hehe... i use a wrap just for my comfort in public but not if i'm at home or MG or a friends place (unless there are strangers). It's the most natural thing in the world... funny we get odd looks for breastfeeding yet people frown upon bottle feeding in public too.... we an't win.. GROW UP PEOPLE we do whats best for our kids, breast or bottle doesn't matter and we will do it where and HOW we want!

After I posted it I just got the usual males saying that they have done it too, most of them being funny about it. None of my family or friends have ever make any bad comments about me bf, I only use a blanket in public, at home or with friends I dont, most of the men including my bro run a mile at the sound of the top 'clicking' undone but I have talked to them about it and let them know that I am not uncomfortable. The reply I have always gotten is that they are uncomfortable as they are just not used to seeing women bf, and they just dont know how to respond, none of their sisters have or partners (all ff) and even though they never see nipple and probably see more of me in my bikini they still get uncomfortable. I love laughing at my bro about it, he sat beside me having a conversation for 20 minutes one day and didnt even realise until he asked to hold her and I said cant I am feeding her.

Is it possible he was joking and playing it the other way the status could be taken? Even if he'd seen the other comments/discussion about bf, he could've been trying to be funny...

i seen the surname on the post you're referring to ZF, and walked away - if it hadn't been the same as yours i'd have had a go! that's such a pathetic attitude to have!

i feed when and where DD needs it - even now! i've not had a single negative comment in nearly 9 months. i am discreet but i refuse to use a wrap as it makes it more obvious, distracts her (she likes to flap them around lol) and adds to bodies that are already toasty from being so close together...

tell your cousin to grow up - it's natural to feed your child when they need it. boobs are for feeding babies - anyone that can't see that needs to get over themselves or put a blanket over their own head!

I also reckon that alot of those kind of comments are made when people dont realise the gravity of the situation on the ground: ie the REAL pressure there is to keep BF behind doors. i know that i didnt give a second thought to it (simply because i thought it was a no brainer that you feed your baby whenever, whereever etc). so maybe they are thinking it's funny simply because they dont realise that it is actually an issue IYKWIM?

in fact, my naievety was so that when i did have DD i breastfed her in the middle of the canberra centre (a shopping centre) at one of those cafes in the middle of the hall without a second thought. it wasnt until much much later that i realised i was getting incredulous looks LOL!

my family are really pro brestfeeding, hubby is great about it as well..

i cover only untill she is attached then off with teh wrap but thats for my comfort lol

blah some people are just clueless.

i have a 17y.o brother, and if i am feeding DD and i know he has friends over, i'll try and sit so they dont get uncomfortable incase they walk past. but i think its good for them to see me do it, i guess if young guys aren't exposed to seeing someone breastfeed, they just wouldn't 'get it'

i tell ya what though, if anyone ever dare said something to me, i would give them a mouthful!

I breastfeed wherever and whenever my baby needs a feed. I have an almost 18yo son(april) and an almost 13yo son (may). I am discreet as possible, which at times is really hard as M will attach and un-attach many times during a feed. I felt funny about feeding in front of my boys before she was born (mainly due to their ages) however since her birth, I don't think twice about it. They have never made a negative comment about seeing me feed, hopefully they will both grow up to think this is the most "normal, natural" thing in the world with a baby and be really supportive to any partner and baby they may have.

I had the other reaction - I joined / became a fan, whatever, of 'If breastfeeding offends you put a blanket over your head' - and my MIL 'liked' it

As for your cousin, maybe his attitude will change with time & circumstance? well hopefully anyway....

Just share this from my 13yo Nephew and his FB status.. Might cheer ya'll up that there is hope for future generations. Bit of background on it - he was in a car acccident over a year ago and his leg was broken. It developed compartment syndrome and they had to operate to prevent muscle death. For over a year he has had his leg "cut open" with a skin graft over it to allow the muscle to swell out without restricting bloodflow through the rest of the leg. Hopefully soon they will be able to remove the graft and sew it back together again..
