Re: Breastfeeding Beyond 12 months #2
10min into hysterical crying cause he's overtired and I took him off due to biting. DH not home this weekend so can't even get him settled down that way. :wall:
Eta typical as soon as I posted he went to sleep curled up to my back
-
Re: Breastfeeding Beyond 12 months #2
Leckert, mum2, I feel your pain... The only reason we aren't in the same boat is that my MIL stopped the night wakings for me having DS2 for two nights. Many many hugs
Apparently I am not allowed to look at DS2 when he's feeding anymore... He pushes my chin and turns my head around
-
Re: Breastfeeding Beyond 12 months #2
OP I have a cat who won't eat if anyone human or feline looks at him lol
Anyone missing those cute little milk drunk newborns? Lol tonight the head swivels were in full swing with ouch nipples left behind.
-
Re: Breastfeeding Beyond 12 months #2
Oh yeah Jo, I do miss that. I managed to feed DS2 to sleep tonight, which was nice, he's not been doing that in a while. But he has started digging his teeth in when he feeds, which isn't nice. I tell him to be gentle and take him off when he's really hurting but it's like he doesn't even notice when he's doing it :(
-
Re: Breastfeeding Beyond 12 months #2
Ouch! Then you get the imprints from the teeth :(
Can I ask when you say feed to sleep what does that mean? Literally feed until he falls asleep?
Sounds like a silly question but just wondering what the definition of it is.
I said I was feeding DD to sleep but was corrected by someone because she's awake and alert (chatting or grizzling) when I put her to bed.
-
Re: Breastfeeding Beyond 12 months #2
For me feed to sleep is feeding until the zzzz's appear and I can transfer ds2 to bed without him waking up :D although that seems to be on the way out here :'( I like doing that cause it's the easy way to put them to sleep (less stressful)
-
Re: Breastfeeding Beyond 12 months #2
my feed to sleep is til child is completely asleep, and comes off or I take them off and then carry them to bed. wish it still worked on my older two.
-
Re: Breastfeeding Beyond 12 months #2
For me, feeding to sleep is feeding them until they're completely asleep, and then leaving and they're still asleep. We cosleep, so I just lie us both down, and feed her until she's asleep, and that's it. Sometimes it's takes a few minutes, sometimes over an hour.
-
Re: Breastfeeding Beyond 12 months #2
I'm a little over it now. DS is 2 1/2 and is down to just one feed before we get up properly in the morning but I'm getting a bit sick of it and he's been "hanging on" with his teeth a bit.......not biting just holding. It's not comfy and I've told him "no boobie juice unless you are gentle!"
I am thinking of weaning but I love our morning snuggle.............I reckon I'll have to get up early when he wakes and start the day without taking him to my bed and sometimes getting another 45 mins sleep :(
has anyone done this weaning gently?
-
Re: Breastfeeding Beyond 12 months #2
Yep for me feed to sleep also means when they are completely knocked out. Takes me from 30 mins to 1hr for dd to feed to sleep and i cosleep with her.
Sometimes i think she is done sucking but when i pull my nipples out she wakes lol.
I usually have to wait until she rolls over herself which seems to take forever.
Most the time i fall asleep before she does!
Ohhh id love to know how to gentle wean dd2 too :)
-
Re: Breastfeeding Beyond 12 months #2
Thanks everyone ok so most of the time I feed til drowsy lol but not asleep, the rest of the time I just feed! :)
-
Re: Breastfeeding Beyond 12 months #2
kateo, my dd had one feed for quite awhile (it was before bed one) and then some days she would miss it, and then it was every 2nd night, and then roughly every 3rd night. on non-feed nights, she would just cuddle dh or i and fall asleep.
you could see if your little one just wants a snuggle without the breastfeed, or over time you might find he starts to drop it without you doing anything.
another method is to have a short feed, and then just cuddles.
-
Re: Breastfeeding Beyond 12 months #2
Thanks for that. I am waiting for him to "just drop it" but I think he's making up for the time it took him to "get it" and hanging in there LOL.
He does NOT want to just snuggle. It's either "boobies" or up and Go go go!!!
I'd LOVE to have just a short feed........he's and expert latcher now.
I think I may just have to be up and going from 5;30-6 each day. Oh well I'll get heaps done!
-
Re: Breastfeeding Beyond 12 months #2
another alternative is to have a bottle of water and a banana or snack beside the bed for the morning. might fix thirst/hunger issues.

Re: Breastfeeding Beyond 12 months #2
So 3 days shy of 20 months, misses E and G are having what is most likely their last feed. I am ridiculously sad about it :(
-
Re: Breastfeeding Beyond 12 months #2
Oh of course you are, no wonder! You have done soooo well, what an inspirational mumma you are, big hugs xx

Haha I get both! DD2 had a virus last Friday. Came on really quickly and all she wanted was to bf and lie around. 24 hrs and she was better - yay for bbs! Makes me glad we persisted. 26 mths so far.
What a great effort, bean!

Re: Breastfeeding Beyond 12 months #2
Deep questions from DS tonight when feeding (he is 2.5) "Does Mo-Mo (his word for boobs/feeding) like spiderman? Mmm Does spiderman like Mo-Mo?"
:-). He feeds most days morning and night and if I am not working and we are at home a feed before midday nap.
-
Re: Breastfeeding Beyond 12 months #2
I'd be thinking Spiderman probably does ;)

Re: Breastfeeding Beyond 12 months #2
Quick q ladies.
Currently caught the flu/cold is it safe to take cold n flu tablets now that dd2 is 18months or still unsafe?
Thanks
-
Re: Breastfeeding Beyond 12 months #2
I don't think so but I would check. I had a bad cold a few weeks ago and rang RWH pharmacy to check the cough medicine I wanted to take.
I think the advice would still be take separate stuff for each symptom rather than a cold/flu tablet and check first.
Hope feel better soon, my cold was the worst I had had in years.
-
Re: Breastfeeding Beyond 12 months #2
Short answer no... But some mums weigh up when baby is feeding, versus when they are taking medication, versus benefits of taking it... And decide yes. Up to you. Have a chat with a pharmacist maybe.
-
Re: Breastfeeding Beyond 12 months #2
Thanks ladies. Decided not to take any meds as dd2 still feeds constantly
-
Re: Breastfeeding Beyond 12 months #2
Went out to dinner with preschool mums last night (DD2 just started in the 2-3 yr old class) and would you believe it, one of them is bfing her 2 1/2 yr old as well! So strange to run into a mum bfing a toddler outside of ABA or homebirth groups. So nice though!

Re: Breastfeeding Beyond 12 months #2
Popping my head in here. Ds4 is turning 1 on the 16th and it appears we wont be weaning anytime soon (which is part YAY and part oh god no). I fed my last son to 14mths but by 11mths he was alternating between cows milk in a sipper cup and breastmilk from mama. Ds4 wont take anything but water very occasionally from a sipper cup. Im happy to keep feeding in a lesser capacity for as long as he wants but Im having to head back to work soon and its frustrating me that he wont take any alternatives (and I cant pump to save my life). That and I dont know anyone who has fed beyond this point and had to contend with these issues.
If anyone has any advice Id love to know it!
-
Re: Breastfeeding Beyond 12 months #2
Wow I can't believe he is almost 1!
My DD won't do a bottle or sippy cup but I taught her to drink from one of those Tommy tipee bottles with the pop up straw. She drinks water and cows milk from it easily now. It took time and a lot of her watching me for her to get the hang of the straw.
I am back at work and DD has just 1 night feed a day now.
I was where you are in December as DD would only drink from me. She got the hang of it and a one week booby strike, while sad at the time was a bit of a blessing as it got us to the routine we have now and it's working.
Good luck!

Re: Breastfeeding Beyond 12 months #2
Woohoo Freya! DD wasn't keen on ebm at all, but just had water and solids during the day from 9 months when i returned to work part time. No need to express if you don't want to. I tried a heap of different cups, but in the end an open cup, the cheap 'take n toss' cups or a basic cup with a strawer were most successful. i think i also tried moew water foods to get fluids in (yogurt, watermelon...) sometimes kids will take alternatives when mum s not there that they won't when they are with you.

Re: Breastfeeding Beyond 12 months #2
I think my BF days are at an end - DS (who turns 3 in July) hasn't had a feed in a week. I am quite comfortable finishing - had been down to one feed for a while and he often would go days without.
-
Re: Breastfeeding Beyond 12 months #2
That's an amazing effort wysiwyg! Well done!! Don't forget those weaning hormones - they can make you a bit emotional xx
-
Re: Breastfeeding Beyond 12 months #2
Amazing wysiwyg!!!! Congrats on the huge accomplishment!!!

Really you think even though he has been feeding so little for quite a while - it might still have some hormonal effect?
I have been very lucky, it has never been an effort or difficult for me with either child.
I was talking to a friend a while back, and he was saying his wife was going to finish up breastfeeding because she was going away for two nights (child was 12 months old) - and she was sad about it. I was explaining that this time last year I was away for 6 days, no feeding or expressing and have still gone on to feed for almost a year after that, he didn't realize that would be possible and said his wife didn't either. I was surprised that someone would think an absence with an older baby would have to mean an end to BF.
-
Re: Breastfeeding Beyond 12 months #2
I miss being in here :(
Well done on the great effort W!!
-
Re: Breastfeeding Beyond 12 months #2
Great work wysiwyg. I have heard other women say that emotional effects of weaning have come as a surprise to them ,because they were only feeding once a day or less. It might not happen to you, but good to be aware of just in case.
Are you going to do something nice for you?
-
Re: Breastfeeding Beyond 12 months #2
Congratulations on 3 years wysiwyg. I agree with HotI, make sure to do something nice for yourself.
-
Re: Breastfeeding Beyond 12 months #2
Ahh you guys sounds like my mum, she is always saying I should do something nice for myself - I do nice things for myself all the time, is just our definitions of fun things don't match.
I will do something nice though, I am getting a folding bike for myself as an end to BF present though.
-
Re: Breastfeeding Beyond 12 months #2
Well done, wysiwyg! Three years is a great achievement. If he hasn't been asking for extended periods, my guess is he won't be bothered. My DD1 was about to turn four when we had a few days away where I didn't offer and she never asked to bf until about a week later. She was very easy to put off, no tears. Clearly ready! Hope it happens the same way for you. I had no hormonal issues (unless relief counts!).
DD2 is still going two times a day. Not at all jealous of her little sister bfing at numerous times, but getting quite cross with me when I end the bf. She would sit on there for way longer than she ever has and that feels comfortable. Plus, I need to get everyone else ready in the morning to get out the door! I count to ten to give her a warning when it's over (after about 5-10 mins), but she still cracks it. Partly it's her personality, so I think I'm going to have to ride it out. She's got a bit of a cold too, so I'm guessing she appreciates the cuddles and the bm.

Re: Breastfeeding Beyond 12 months #2
DS weaned when i was pregnant, around 19 months of age. i have expressed a few times since baby was born (if she has slept long times), and most times DS has claimed the milk before it reaches the freezer. I am happy not to restart breastfeeding him, but also happy that he enjoys the milk.

Re: Breastfeeding Beyond 12 months #2
Spock is still going strong. I limit her to max 3 a day. (After breakfast, afternnon nap.and bedtime) some days she only gets 2 depending on when im working.
Im on nightshift the next 4 nights. And im staying in the nurses quarters cause te commute is too far to drive when on nights.
As a result im not going to see Spock until monday (mum n dad are bringing her to me on mon and.staying with her in the town while i work mon night)
Alot of things have me nervous, but obviously my boobs are one. Im worried she might just see it as the end. Im not ready. Im worried ill be so uncomfortable, im taking my pump but never had much luck expressing so worried wont be enough. ..
Any advice, encouragement would be great
