Welcome Kaytee :)
Kaytee I wish DD2 fed to sleep! DD1 did for three years. That was so easy. DD2 on the other hand believes bfing is for nutrition only and prefers to fall asleep on her tummy and at night time with a cuddle. Lucky she seems to be happy to self settle now, so it's not too difficult. She's generally a 40 min napper during the day, which is not long enough to get much done!
WM; I am in Swan Hill.
I went looking for a breast pump yesterday at the hospital, but doesn't look like they had one. :( Very surprised. I didn't really feel like having a second shower, due to a severe lack of progress the first time round. I ended up going home last night, about 8.30, because I think I had just had enough of being in hospital, missed my family, felt awful, etc, etc, etc. I was in terrible tears.
I have a manual breast pump, but no bottles for it. The Man will be going out soon to see if he can get a bottle to fit. God I hope so. This is utter agony. I had a hot shower before, and tried to express, even just a little. But I could not get a drop. Not one  . Usually in the hot shower, let down happens, and they practically run on their own. But nothing! So unhappy and sore!
Oh Netix you poor thing. Can you buy an electric pump? Once your milk has settled you don't need to pump usually, unless you are working etc. I don't use mine super regularly but i find it's really handy to have an electric one, for daddy to feed her if I'm out on the weekend getting my hair done or something, or for relieving engorged breasts if she refuses her first feed of the morning, which is common at the moment.
Are you a member of the ABA Netix? Your local group will have pumps for hire (it's cheaper if you're a member). Chemists sometimes have them too
Oh the number of times I've wished she would *not* feed to sleep! At night it's all me, DH can't put her to bed, and it's only on the really horrible nights when she's sick that after a few hours of me she let's him rock her to sleep. Naps are either on me or in the pram. So I'm just waiting for the day she decides she's tired, lays down and puts herself to sleep lol.
Netix, I really hope being home can help you relax and maybe express a bit. I agree with hiring a pump, but hopefully your DH can get some bottles for yours quickly. I'm useless at hand expressing but my simple manual pump works great.
The Man went to both chemists in town, but not any luck in finding even a similar bottle, so he bought another manual pump (avent), WITH a bottle. :yay: i expressed a little then fed mack. He keeps going to sleep before finishing, so i dont think he is getting whqt he needs :(
Kaytee - even if they stop feeding to sleep (my DD did when i was prgnant), it still doesn't mean they will decise they are tired, lay down and go to sleep easily. Can you feed her lying down and then sneak out again?
Netix, hope you feel better soon.
Yeah, I'm thinking she may start doing that when she's around 13  If I'm tired I feed her lying down, but I prefer her to at least start in her cot. She's the very definition of a starfish baby, she's so uncomfortable to sleep with!
Netix, hooray for the pump! Were you seeing an LC or anyone in hospital? Maybe he's not latching on properly if he can't get enough and it's tiring him out?
Thanks guys.
Kaytee; Didn't see a SOUL about bf in hospital! I doubt there would be a LC in town, and I *don't* think there is an ABA group anywhere near here if I needed them. Luckily with my first two I learnt so much about bf and attachment (lol, I could be the most qualified person in town! Hahahaha), so I know he's attaching properly (though I also know I am a little lazy sometimes and know he doesn't ), especially since my milk started to come in. It's hard for him to have much to latch onto when my bb's are the size of melons.
Even though I did some expressing before, my bb's are still super hard, but at least not *quite* so sore. They are bearable now, and I can feel that my mood has definitely improved. Now I just realise I need to sleep!
Perhaps I should study and be an LC......
Netix - i don't know how active they are, but there is a contact no. for your local group

Kaytee- I'm still waiting with DD too. I was thinking more of the day nap when i suggested feeding her on a bed and then sneaking out. Having half an hour to yourself can make a big difference if it works.
Netix, that's pretty poor form from the hospital. I bet if you trained as an LC you'd be in high demand! I get what you mean about being too big for him to get on - I remember the first time DD slept through, I'd never seen such big boobs in real life! Poor DD couldn't do a thing with them. Luckily as soon as she tried I started squirting about three feet so DH got bowls to catch the milk and I sat there waiting to deflate so the poor bugger could actually get something in her mouth  Hopefully having the pump makes it easier, and the rest too, sweet dreams!
HotI, I didn't even think about feeding in bed for day naps! Feeling a bit silly now lol. Usually the morning nap is shorter so I just get comfy on the couch, then in the afternoon we go for a walk and I get all my stuff done while she sleeps when we get back. At daycare though, it's crazy, she goes to a little toddler bed on the floor, and just puts herself to sleep. For up to 2.5 hours!! At home she has a little fold out couch, and when she's tired she'll go lie down, but she still just plays around and not sleep, she'll come over for a feed when she's ready to nap.
believe me, some metro hospitals are crap with breastfeeding, too. \
Hope you've got it sorted Netix.
They do grow out of feeding to sleep. DS did by around 12 months - was a bloody pain because then I had to just lie there with him for HOURS till he'd finally get to sleep. And STILL, DH was no good till he was closer to 2.
Thank you very much HotI. Most appreciated.
We just got back from the hospital (love living only like two minutes away from it!), and let me just say; Halla.. Halle.. Hallelu... THANK GOD! The local mchn called me earlier to check in and make an appointment for home visit. Very quickly we got on the topic of feeding & engorged bb's. She rang the hospital and rang me back and said to get some things together and just go down there. Turns out they DO have a breast pump I could have used. Oh was I peeved! Anyway, we went there to midwifery, and two of the nurses that were on last night when I left were working. It wasn't long before chwngeover, but one of them is obviously the 'bf go to person'. She asked if I was this engorged last night when I left, and felt bad that she had 'let' me leave like that. Anyway, good news is I don't have mastitis! :leap: but that it would have come pretty soon judging by my enormously sore bb's. I got onto the breast pump and expressed about 200mLs in a few minutes, then put Mack on. The little poop played around and wasn't interested! we stripped him off, and he came around, and I think *eventually* got everything he needed from one bb. Now I just have two very grazed nipples, one I've never had that bad, and one bb that still has a bit of pain. They both still have some lumps, but, oh! The relief! Doesn't matter if I get it again tomorrow, I feel so good right now! And, further satisfied because I know that Mack has eaten his whole meal, instead of just his veges.
:loveshower:
That must be a huge relief hun. How frustrating that no-one could find the pump for you before.
Mack can probably get a lot of milk out in a short time so he well could be getting enough. His nappies will give you a good clue. Otherwise popping him on often, on the same side a couple of times in a row if you think he didn't get much the first time, should get him there. You might also like to try some baby led attachment with him to see if that is kinder on your nipples. Do you want some links to baby led attachment?
MantaRay; the links could be useful, if you are able to post them, it would be most appreciated. I did have lots of info on bf, but I'm not sure where it is, and if its posted in front of me, I'm more likely to remember to read it. I think, and as the mw said today, that Mack has just been getting lots of air over the last day and a bit, rather than milk, just because he's been struggling with the attachment due to the engorgement. I just gave him a feed, and it only seemed short, so I will put him back onto that side later. He's fallen asleep on my chest again. Awwww.
Glad things are looking up netix.
Ds2 has worked out the clamp and turn head around while "feeding" tonight - at about 2 1/2 minths that's fun don't remember ds1 doing that this early. Bit ouchy :(

Glad you got it all worked out netix, hope its better tomorrow.
Leckert, sympathies I remember that. Ouch.

That's so cute netix. Here you go:
Attachment to the breast
Baby Led, Mother Guided - Biological Nurturing/Laid-back Breastfeeding - Dr Suzanne Colson, MSc, PhD (Nursing)
Baby Led, Mother Guided - NBCI - Newman Breastfeeding Clinic and Institute - Dr Jack Newman, MD, FRCPC & Edith Kennerman, IBCLC
If you're looking for information on breastfeeding, the ABA site www.breastfeeding.asn.au is a great place to start. They have links to other good sites too. The search bar in the top right hand corner is the easiest way to navigate.
I second baby led attachment. Actually I might try again when DD is fussing again.
=) morning beautiful women!! lots of little things in this post =P
I expressed for the first time this morning. mainly cause as a result of our wind problems (read may baby group if intersted), I didn't feel DD was draining my right boob, also i have noticed (i dont know what they are called) but the little bumps on your areola, ive noticed on my right they are getting red and inflamed (like a angry pimple), they go down and 'heal' with in the day, but i've had 2 seperate ones do it now (both on my right). so I thought i would try and drain my breast.. plus I was interested in trying the pump etc (and dh has been on my back to do it so he can help me more and not feel so limited in what he can actually do).
My question is when I express, as I probably wont be expressing large amounts... maybe a bit before feeds so its not so full and fast flowing when DD gets on, I was curious about storing the milk. if i only express say 30mls, I dont want heaps of seperate 30ml lots, i would like to have a bit more in lots, (like a variety until i know what/when we use the stored milk). so how long after the first expressed 30ml can I add another 30ml etc.. if i keep it frozen can I just keep adding the same tub, or only do it like if its within a day??
I did try and call the ABA, but it said it was really busy and as its not an 'emergency' i thought I would sus out their web site first, I couldn't find my answer..but I did find an article about D-MER (dysphoric milk ejection reflex), and realised this is what i have been feeling. just before let down I do get a dyphoric feeling, like I feel competely unmotivated and even a sense of dread, actually the same feeling i sometimes get (TMI) 'coming down' from an orgasm. just a feeling of bland nothing...its really hard to explain, but I never mentioned it cause its not making me hate feeding or anything worse, so is mild, but was interesting to know there is an actual name for it..
ok...DD is awake I better go =)
From what I'm aware if you're expressing small amounts at a time.
1. You can add to the container in the fridge, but you have to get them both at the same temp first. So put the fresh one in the fridge by itself til it cools down then add it to other bottle.
2. No you cannot add to ones in the freezer
3. You can store the milk in the fridge for up to 3 days before freezing. But of course the shorter the better.
4. You can store in fridge freezer for 3 months, and 6 months in a deep freeze.
5. I used the freezer milk bags, which you can buy at chemist or priceline, to freeze mine. Easier to store, and warm up faster. And I stored them in 150-200ml lots.
Others feel free to correct me. This is just what I did, and had no issues here.

Cool down in fridge before combining lots in fridge then freeze. I used to add my expresses for the day together at the end of the day then freeze in 30ml blocks (240ml needed for sensible lines trays in total) if I wasn't getting them into bottles for next day's care. (Friday's milk would be frozen and then Mondays bottles would be made from frozen ebm - ensured turn over so that ebm wouldn't be in freezer too long.)
Don't add fresh or cooled ebm to already frozen ebm.
Sorry cant remember other qs & on phone.
ETA my ds1 drank 90ml bottles for a while (4 - 18 mths i think) then upped to 120mls eventually

thanks WM, see thw MACH nurse said you can add to frozen..but i knew i would check with ABA anyway.
maybe keeping it in smaller amount s will be better to start anyway. we just have to get more containers =)
Once frozen I used to take out of trays and store on ziplock bags with correct date on them.
I also swapped to the qubies trays as my lids weren't staying on the sensible lines trays properly. The qubies are about 200ml across 8 blocks. The qubies are marketed towards storing "first" foods aka puréed foods for babies but work well for ebm I found - didn't use them for food here.

Good advice re EBM storage! Thanks ladies!
L got weighed today. He's put on 900g in 3 weeks! Yay for boobies!
so...everyone says chocolate is bad... how do ppls babies react to it??
somethings not the same with my little one over the last few days and im just trying to sus out possible causes
Teirae- I don't know how my babies react to chocolate it doesn't seem to make a difference.... Good thing or I may have to wean early! Lol jk :-) but thought I'd add my sil SWEARS when she eats chocolate which is rarely it INCREASES her milk supply significantly!! Wish it did for me I'd permanently be a friesian cow not just for the 1st month haha
Teirae, it's a yes here :( the only thing my DD reacts to unfortunately. Gives her an upset tummy and makes her unsettled. I've heard diet is one of the last culprits when looking at feeding issues but it did make a difference with us.
Have you noticed an obvious change in feeds after eating something?
shes just been really unsettled the last few days.... actually waking up screaming which she has never done before, normallyjust wakes up grizzly, not blood curdling screams, and she isnt sleeping much. its obviously wind, and its causing her pain. the other thing is i can hear her gut...like you know how your tummy grumbles, I can hear hers over the last few days. =( my poor girl...makes me so sad.
I just cant think of anything ive done different...except having a little bit of milo in my coffee (decaf) ...i just have no idea and trying to narrow down everything
you would be coming up to the 6 week wonder week!
according to the chart were not in a wonder week...we are in a normal week...i already sused that out =P
She might be approaching a wonder week? DD always shows 'symptoms' of a wonder week a little earlier than in the guide.
Or a slight cold?
I've not noticed chocolate with DD as I only eat it sometimes, at night, but I think coffee is an issue here. I can have one cup but any more seems to agitate her.
I haven't noticed any changes in Mack after eating chocolate, sorry not much help.
We're getting through the mastitis, even my let down has come to the party! Just one thing, noticed today (started taking my mastitis antibiotics yesterday) that Mack has a lot of little pimples on his face. Could this be from my medication? I don't think they were there before yesterday.
DD gets pimples or a rash from the constant moisture and drying off of moisture by mummy around her mouth- milk, drool etc.
Teirae, bummer. So hard to see them uncomfortable. I guess you could see how things go without the Milo, if it makes a difference? Maybe she has a random upset tummy or her little belly is still getting used to digesting...? It's difficult to narrow down, I know. Hope she's feeling better soon.
Netix, do you ever react to ABs yourself? Another possibility is a hormone rash - my DD had one that came and went for the first six weeks or so...
T, there are lots of possible reasons. They do change, all the time. Wonder weeks, developmental changes, phases of the moon, mums can literally run themselves ragged trying to figure out the magical 'recipe', but very often it's just time that sorts it out.
Somtimes mums just 'know' that there's something else going on, so it's good to trust your instincts. If you suspect chocolate, then cut it out and see, maybe? Anything more drastic than that and I'd suggest speaking with a dietitian.
Lots of babies get little rashes - is it the normal baby rash or somethign else?
So DD has her first cold and it's a nasty one. She's gurgly and snuffly and has a mucous cough and is so very cranky. She's fussy on when she will feed at the best of times so today has been a disaster. She's only fed at 6:30am, 11:30am, a small top up at about 12:30-1. She did have another feed in the morning but threw it back up. Any tips? Should I be worried? I took her to the doctor yesterday and there's nothing serious though her symptoms are worse today. No temp
