Forgot to add she can breathe properly when she does feed
I dont know... that is just the only thing that i've done differently, and i guess its something i can control... but really you wouldnt think something that small would cause this big a deal/change. maybe she is wonder weeking...just at a different time to the magic chart. Its just so heart breaking not knowing whats wrong and not being able to make her feel better =(
her feeding has changed too, she isn't feeding as much, but i know she is still getting enough cause she is refusing when i reoffer, so im not worried about that (yet =P)
:D It's extra confusing in the early weeks because they change so rapidly and frequently.
I don't know your baby, so I certainly can't tell you, but just bear in mind that sometimes it's not something you've done or something you can change, it just is as it is.
Re intake, watching the nappy output is the best way to keep track.
LL - poor baby! It's really hard when they are sick. do you have a nose sucker thing?
The woman in the chemist talked me out of it and said it was too unpleasant for little babies.
LL often they complain when sucking it out but if you can use it they're great. Ds1 wouldn't let me as a bub; ds2 has let me a few times, but often I just squirt the saline solution up there and that seems to help.

Yes I've got the spray and that does help.
Another one who doesn't have problems with chocolate. Lucky coz that was one of my lifelines in the early days. My main issue was onion, gave my DS bad tummy cramps. And anything spicy or garlicky.
They are all individuals and sometimes go through changes at different times. The first 3 months are the most difficult with their guts, as they take a little while to fully mature. But it does get better.
My DS still has issues with dry skin and pimples on his cheeks. I think its a combination of things: breastmilk, snot, drool and having to get his faced wiped 100s of times in a day. Found using curash oatmeal moisturiser daily improved it.

Hi all
Just wanting to introduce myself quickly and sub in here as I'd like to join. I'm a new mum to a gorgeous little girl (3 weeks today). I'm exclusively breastfeeding and hoping to have a long and successful breastfeeding journey :)
Just wanted to share a very funny BF dream with you (i have lots of feeding dreams probably because it is still a bit all consuming at times). I live in the country and we don't have an ABA group active around here but there is a lady who is a LLL leader who runs a breastfeeding support group at the women's community centre. I've been thinking about going along. Anyway I had a dream last night that I went and they made me feed all the babies. I was exhausted! They kept telling me how great my supply was ha ha.
Thanks!

Buffy1; No, I haven't reacted to antibiotics before, but I haven't had this particular one before.
Had the two week MCHN appointment this morning. Apparently Mack has lost ten grams since the last weigh in! Have no idea how, as he has been putting it back on since we left hospital, and feeding ALL DAY yesterday (definitely velcro baby!). :dunno: And apparently (I didn't know this), but having mastitis makes the milk taste different to bubs. At least that explains why he wasn't 'enjoying' his feeds on the right side (the affected side) yesterday.
So we have another weigh in on Friday morning. And my mastitis is not improving yet. And the MCHN told me to go and see a dr as I still have abdominal pains.
Oh Netix that's no good. Hope the doctor will sort things out for you. Did the nurse offer an explanation as to why your Velcro baby would have lost weight?
Hi Dantri!
So bubs still sick today. In good spirits *most* of the time and feeding is ok- her appetite is off but she's still feeding about 5 times in a 24 hour period. Except she just threw up a feed before, poor little girl.
Ladylove; no, no suggestions why the weight loss. :( Pardon the pun, but I am at a loss to understand it. I hope your dd is okay soon.
Lol, dantri!
Thought i might pop in here. DS is 6 days old and feeding wonderfully. Well, I think he is. :)
Having lots of trouble getting him to burp, which is an issue.
He was born with a severe tongue tie, poor munchkin could hardly move his tongue when he cried and could barely latch. They cut it the morning after he was born and he's fed great ever since.
Not having any real issues at the moment. My milk has settled in nicely. We're up for a while in the night, sometimes its an hour, sometimes it's 3. He's just a hyper little thing.
I'm so in love with my little man and beyond excited that breast feeding is working for us, after not being able to feed DD.
Netix, 10g is a very small amount. That is less than the weight of a poo or an item of clothing. The difference could be different scales, different clothing, even a difference in timing between a feed or a poo (maybe last weigh in was after a feed, or this one was after a poo). How long had it been between weigh ins?
You are doing all the right things feeding him frequently so hopefully it will be fine on Friday with a good gain. One thing you can try is to offer him a top up at the breast about 20 - 30 minutes after a feed. This is when milk is fattiest so if he does need a little help gaining weight, that should do the trick.
Charlotte, that's great that they snipped the tie so quickly. We had to wait 3 weeks with DS1. Everyone is doing so well!!
Thanks MantaRay. Yeah, I know it is a very small amount. The mchn just seemed to make a bit of a big deal about it, because it was a loss. Full stop. She acknowledged it could be different scales (scales: my mum's absolute hate when it comes to babies, as she thinks they are all flawed since they all read differently  ), but I still think it odd that it be at a loss.
I'd try to see a different MHCN, Netix. I am very skeptical at the advice that milk tastes different with mastitis. If you are in pain that will affect how relaxed you are while feeding him and your let down and the ABs can also have an effect on bub's system. All of these things might affect your bfing, so I discount the taste theory. Have you seen a LC at all? You might even find you can still access one at the hospital.
Charlotte - congrats!! Sounds like you're off to a wonderful bfing start.
Netix, that must be a worry for you. How is he otherwise? It's good to watch the big picture - growth, output, demeanour, etc - rather than just numbers on a scale. Hope the next weigh in is moer reassuring.
Great to hear Charlotte! I'm glad they got on to the tongue tie so quickly. Hope it's all smooth sailing from here
Netix your MHCN sounds a bit off actually. She's making a big deal out of 10grams? That sounds typical of someone working for government who has to follow rules to the letter and be very textbook about issues or risk the government being negligent.
Mack is "otherwise perfect", in terms of putting out wet nappies (I think "enough"), normal dirty nappies, he's strong, very alert (already turning his head for voices), sleeping a lot, and very, very happy. (the "otherwise perfect" statement is from me, not the mchn)
We are seeing a different mchn tomorrow morning for the weigh in, so we will see what she has to say about it. Yesterday's mchn called the office while she was here for the appointment, like it was an emergency.
I am in pain when I feed him, I know that would affect let down. I'm still not sure if there is an LC at the hospital. The two times I have gone back to use the breast pump, I feel like I have been somewhat lectured about pnd before I was allowed to use the breast pump. And then, when I'm done, they tell me that I can come in anytime to use it. O_o. Huh?
I have pmd you netix.

Thank you Williams Mummy. :)
Your welcome, hope it helps. Good luck.

Mack "passed" his weigh-in this morning, I just can't remember his weight. To be honest, I didn't pay that much attention to remember it, as I thought he was fine, and I told the mchn that. She agreed. Unfortunately I forgot to talk to her about bf or seeing a lc.
Congratulations netix. Enjoy the fact you're doing a great job. Give them a call to get contact details of a lc if you're interested.

Oh that's great Netix.
WRT the burping, is it bothering him not bringing the wind up? I had the same problems with DS, I could never get his wind up. I rang my midwife about it when he was a week old and she told me that nowadays they arent so vigilant on fully breastfed babies getting their wind up, and said if he doesnt bring it up then not to worry as he will let me know if it bothered him. So I would try for a burp for a few minutes, and if he didnt do one then I let him be (even if he was going to bed afterwards). If he woke or got unsettled 15-20mins later or something, then I would try again and sure enough a big burp would come out.
If it is bothering him though then I am not much help, I never did find a decent position that worked well every time lol.
We're at 17 months now, and have started getting the "when are you thinking of weaning" questions. Not in a mean way or anything, just curiosity from family. DP is getting a bit funny with it now that DS is so "big", he has told me that once he is 18 months he doesnt want him bf-ing anymore  Lol. I wouldnt mind trying to night-wean either now or at 18 months, but definitely not fully weaning. I like knowing that he is still getting lots of goodies in him when he has phases of not eating much food at all (like the last couple of weeks). It gets tiring with him feeding so often during the day again, but I love being able to take that time out to just chill with my little guy. Dont know how DP is going to react when the 18month mark rolls on by and we dont stop hahahaha
I don't know if its just a stage, or what, but I'm having feelings of inadequecy. With regards to supply. Mack seems to be *constantly* feeding, which makes it exceptionally difficult to do anything myself. I'm not sure if he actually is hungry, or is having a grizzle for another reason and I'm just going with the idea that he's hungry (mostly because he is a big boy). I wonder if I should feed him on the bb, then make a small bottle of formula to "fill him up" so that he sleeps better?
Ideas, anyone?
Netix that is totally normal for littlies. And you will find stages where they do it again too. You are not inadequate. If you didn't have enough milk he'd let you know, and not by feeding regularly. No need to top up with formula, all that will do is decrease your production.
He is young, so they feed regularly to increase your supply. And as they go through different milestones they will feed regularly to increase your supply to their requirements. Unless you have a medical issue with bf, your bb will do their job and provide exactly what your DS needs.
My DS fed 2 hourly during the day and 3 hourly overnight for 3 months. Then 3 hourly during day at least for 6 months. He dropped down to 4 feeds a day just before he turned 12 months. And yet today he has been feeding 6 times, but I think he's going through a growth spurt
It is very taxing on your time, especially in the early days. But it does get better. Just remember that you are giving him everything he needs, so you are definately not inadequate.

Hi,
it sounds like the weigh in has really thrown you and you are now doubting yourself.
The other day you said your baby was sleeping long periods. Quietly, that had me worried! It acuatally sounds better to me that your baby is feeding a lot, and demanding feeds. How often does he feed in 24hours? Babies feed AT LEAST 8-12 times in 24 hours - that's normal. Some babies are sleepy in the first couple of weeks, and don't really feed effectively. Was he jaundiced at all?
Often when mothers are told they baby is not gaining enough weight they are just left with that, but no-one actually discusses with the mother how to increase her baby's intake - usually a very simple thing to do. It's also concerning that feeding is so painful. It's easy to subconsciously put off feeding when baby is a sleep and your nipples hurt so much! Nipples usually heal quickly, but I would recommend you see an LC.
Thank you both. I think I just needed to hear that 'you're doing a good job' line  . No one has suggested that I ff him, I probably did have doubts after the weight 'issue'.
Barb; he does "seem" to sleep for long periods. If he is laying on me, especially on my chest after feeding, he can sleep for a few hours. Oir last feed last night was around midnight, and he then slept through to 6am before the next feed. Is that normal at this stage? To be honest, I don't know the number of feeds he has in 24hrs. I will try to keep count of them today. It will probably just be a "normal" amount! We do on demand feeding, and he wasn't jaundiced at all. You're right that no one suggested anything with regard to bringing his weight back up, but I'm hoping that was just because the first weigh in was low and the second was good. My badly grazed nipple still hasn't healed, and whilst it is slightly better than it was, it's still not pretty, and painful. My let down is much better than it was, even on the grazed and mastitis side. I still have little lumps from mastitis, the dr yesterday (who I'm not hugely confident in, but they all seem the same around here :( ) said it was going ok, but still gave me a script for penicillin for a couple of weeks. I have continued to feed Mack on the mastitis side. It, combined with the grazing, really is not enjoyable at all. We have good attachment, with the only detail I forgot from feeding my other two, being the "chest to chest" positioning. Not bad I think. So far today (since midnight), he's been on the bb about five times. It's sometimes hard to know when one feed finishes and the next begins.
Have pmd you netix

Thank you Williams Mummy. I just can't get my phone to reply properly on a pm atm.
Having a few issues, Colby feeds perfectly off my right side. But, when it comes to my left, he just won't stay on. I think my flow might be a bit fast for him. I make sure that I don't put him on til after let down but he still has trouble.
My let down is really intense to the point where it squirts out really far. I'm leaking really badly on that side, I put a folded up flannelette flat in there while I feed on the other side but that still gets soaked. I've ordered some cloth breastpads, hoping they might be a bit more absorbant than just normal ones.
Any ideas? He's 9 days old, will my milk settle a bit more?? I love feeding him, but I dread putting him on the left side.
Burping is still hit and miss. It doesn't seem to bother him too much, he's just pretty gassy. But, I guess if he's not upset by it I won't worry too much.
Hey Charlotte, congrats on your little man!
I have a quite a forceful letdown on one side too. It has settled since the early days but my bub still gulps a bit!
The ABA gave me some great advice that really helped. I lean back in a semi-reclined position so DD is working against gravity initially, then slowly come back up. More upright (with baby almost 'sitting') can work too. I also found block feeding useful - feeding off one side for a couple of hours at a time, until the supply settled down.
Am sure you'll get some good advice from the more experienced ladies here. Good luck x
I was a squirter here too, it does settle down over time and bubs does get better at handling it. But its taken me 12 months to stop leaking through breastpads. Cloth ones aren't as good as the disposable ones, for a heads up. But are great when the flow settles down a bit. Save you a fair bit of money. I remember just talking about bf, and leaking through my breastpads, bra, singlet, tshirt and jumper.
Some tricks I learnt were:
* to feed off the slower side first and catch the big let down in a bottle. Id do this a few times, then when my fast side was becoming real full I'd feed DS on that side.
* I expressed first thing in the morning from my high flow side too, which would get rid of the night time accumulation. Making the pressure a little less for the day.
* another trick I learnt was to apply pressure to the nipple of the off side during let down, this would decrease the amount of leakage.
I hope some of these tips will be helpful to you.

Netix, it sounds a lot like feeds are taking a long time so it's hard for you to know when one has finished and the next one started. Sometimes babies like to suck for a long time after a feed - sucking is very good for helping them digest and process wind, but it can be painful if your nipples are damaged. Also, he will probably be getting most of the milk in the first 20 minutes on each breast. So after 20 or so minutes if he is not actively swallowing, you could try pulling him off gently, changing his nappy and offering the other side. If he takes that, give him another 20 minutes and then take him off again and try and settle him without the breast. If he still seems hungry in 20 - 30 minutes you can offer the breast again for a top up. Sometimes restricting the length of the feed can help increase intake (as odd as that sounds), and it might also be better for your nipples. If he is still actively swallowing after 20 minutes or if he really won't settle again without the breast, it is ok to feed him for longer. It just might be something else to try that makes things a little easier for you.
Hi everyone,
Thought I'd pop in here. I have 2 sons - BF DS1 until 14 months and DS2 still going at 16 months. I do love it as they do (clearly! Lol) but weighing up the pros and cons of weaning DS2. I would like to have another bubba and don't think I could tandem BF. anyhoo just saying hello
Hi roses. :)
Hi Ladylove :)
Uh-oh, I think I have some blocked ducts. Does this sound like blockages: i noticed the top and outside of my right breast feels really lumpy and very hard. I was doing my nightly pump and massaging the lumps but no milk was coming out after the first 5 or so minutes, even though the lumps are still there. They are hard but not at all sore. Maybe blocked because bub has not been taking full feeds today or yesterday as she still has this bad cold, and I've been too lazy to pump during the day as now I'm sick too. :(
Oh also the lumps are near the top of the breast, not closer to the nipple.
It certainly could be blocked ducts. Keep trying to empty the breast, and some gentle massage while you do it. It could be time for a warm shower and some hand expressing, or otherwise use a warm cloth on your breast for a few minutes before pumping/feeding to try and help that milk move. All the best!
