Yeh I drank so much water when I first started BF! But it's strange cuz I seemed to never need to pee lol which I found so strange going from needing to pee all the time to hardly ever hahah
Also netix - they actually suggest leaving some milk on the nipples when u finish feeding / pumping as that helps prevent cracked nipples etc
Just curious, is there a time guideline for how long it might take a 2 week old baby to feed, or does it go by how full your boobs feel?
nup. just depends on your baby.
I'd generally just let DS feed till he stopped sucking. He'd never really detach himself, but he'd stop sucking and just lay there with my nipple in his mouth (if he wasn't asleep) - if he'd only had one side I'd burp him and change him, then offer the second side. He'd either take it or would turn away and go to sleep.
I followed my baby, M. DD1 would hang around for 45-60 mins contentedly at the breast, sometimes feeding, then snoozing and suckling, then back to feeding. DD2 never took longer than 5 mins, from birth. :dunno: I let them decide.
When DD1 was sound asleep I'd gently detach and as long as she didn't rouse herself frantically searching for my nipple I'd assume she was done.
How long/often is your LO feeding?
She still isn't strong enough to suck at the breast. We've been feeding EBM via a tube, now a bottle. Today she had her first suck at the boob for about 8 minutes. I have no idea how much she got. But she did generate a strong let down and sucked once every few seconds so who knows.:

I know it's probably a silly question, but is there anything I can do to delay my let down? At times I'm lucky to get DS on. I position him and as soon as he touches my nipple, or even before I can fully position him, I've got milk squirting everywhere.
Charlotte - it will slow itself over the next few weeks, and bub will get easier to get on. Until then you can hand squirt the first let down into a facewasher before you try and put him on - that way he doesn't have to fight a fire hose!

The only way to know totally for sure is to weigh the baby before and after - over quite a few feeds, because each individual one will vary. As long as she's trying and getting something she will work the rest out over the next few weeks.

Yay thanks! The MW reckons she wouldn't have gotten much, but I could feel the drawing out, and my boob tingling (I get a painful refill, which I got again after her feed) so she must have gotten some. I'm celebrating anyway :D.:
That's a great idea. Or, express 10-20 mls before the feed, and freeze it so by the end of the day you have a spare feed on hand :).:
i had little piles of face washers all around the house in the early days. expressing a little helped to not take out the back of babys throat with the first let down.
yep face washers all over our house. i use them at night as vreast pads. and if i feel really full i express a bit before hand.

When I was first BF I was excruciatingly thirsty but not so much now.
M, it's good for the nipples to leave a little milk air dry on them :)
We just had a 15 minute breastfeed, hooray! Pumped about 40 mils less on that boob so I know she got boobie gold :D. Hopefully we can wean off the bottle, at least while I am at home. I am going to bed a happy woman!

I wouldn't totally wean off the bottle if you are going to be returning to work - it can be a horrible battle to get them back on it! Keep one bottle feed every few days so that she remembers what that funny thing is for.

Hi everyone, been a while since I popped my head in here. And as usual need some advice! Sahti is 16 months now and is starting to clamp down with her teeth on every feed again! We haven't had this for about 5 months now and now it's back! Do I just keep on taking her off? Every time I take her off she screams and sobs like I've just stuck a knife in her or something lol

MrsN - This is what I've done: take her off and put her down and tell her "I will not let you bite me. If you bite, no more milk". (or something to that effect). And then don't offer again.
They get the message pretty quickly at this age.

MNB, just as MadB says, no harm in teaching her bfing manners. I already tell DD2 to be more gentle and take her off if she's clamping down. Can't believe she's getting so big!

Also warn her when you start the feed - "no teeth or milk goes away". And praise the heck out of her when there are no toothmarks!
Who would have thought I would have to teach a kid bfing manners? Hehe!! She's still my little baby, hard to think that she would understand if I said those things to her. Once the baby always the baby I think lol

Just a quick one while I've got DS attached to my boob.
I got him weighed yesterday and the MCHN said that he should have put on about 300grams since his last weigh (12 days)..... Nope. 700grams!! And grew 3cm!!
I'm so happy! I knew he was getting bigger but didn't expect that! So, he has officially put on 1kg from his birth weight.

"breastfed babies don't need burping" - is it the food itself (bm v's formula) or the delivery (breast v's bottle) that determines this?
I think it's the delivery - boobs stop and start, forcing babies to take little breaks.:
But a BF baby can still manage a hell of a burp - it depends on the baby!
You can give EBM with breaks as well - usually 2 or 3 per feed.
I was told this by the midwife that did our prenatal classes. She said it was because there's no air in the breast, so if baby is latched on well they shouldn't be getting any air and shouldn't need to burp.:
I think DS has a weak suck or there's an issue with his attachment. He has been breastfeeding really well, but when I tried to reduce top ups he lost weight. It's really frustrating!! His latch seems to have gotten worse, it's like he's become lazy, he kind of hangs off the end a bit. I have gone back to basics trying to attach him but it doesn't always work. I know he's still getting some milk, I can see him and hear him sucking and swallowing, but he's not getting enough.. Not sure what I can do about it. I want him off this tube by his 1st birthday. I am so over expressing.. I love BF him though. It's so nice to wake up in the morning and for him to have a feed. I love the booby smiles :) I love that I feel like my body isn't totally useless at least I am nourishing him a bit. I just wish we could exclusively BF *sigh..
:hug: that is hard work and really frustrating. I think you are doing great getting EBM into him but I know how much it would mean for him to exclusively BF.:
Do you know what causes the lazy attachment? That is what DD2 does as well :( just hangs off the edge and drinks my let down, not much more than that.

BAL - You are getting there, slowly but surely. You are so persistent that I am in complete awe of all of your effort. To come this far and still be bfing! He is getting so much from you.
M - try taking her off and reattaching if she's slipping.
Can't believe it's almost seven mths here! DD2 is loving her food too now (we're doing BLS) and it is definitely going in, judging by her output. No reduction in bfing, as you'd expect, but i think she'll be another good eater like her big sister. No teeth yet and I can't feel any close.
I think it's a bit of a myth re burping actually... I think it's more a case of some babies are more windy than others. DD is BF and attaches well but always needed burping as a young baby. Now she's almost 6 months she usually brings up burps herself but still gets wind pain. She is however a greedy fast sucker plus I have fast flow.
I agree- Blessed I'm so proud and admiring of you and your BF journey.
DD1 never needed burping, she'd bring any wind up as I changed sides.
DD2 is such a guzzler she can still give herself a bellyache but rather than actively burping I tend to keep her upright for a bit after a feed.
