Breastfeeding Chatter #17

I'm so excited - after one year of bfing DD2 she's finally started feeding to sleep! Since birth, she must have been the only baby ever born who never fed to sleep. Didn't help that she only feeds for about five minutes. She has finally decided she likes comfort sucking and is asking for a bf when we hop onto her bed. Much quicker and easier than patting to sleep!

Might have something to do with her need to reconnect as she becomes more independent, but whatever it is I am enjoying it. Going to sleep is quicker and snugglier. ;) Why on earth do people tell mums not to feed to sleep?

Yay! I trained DD to feed to sleep at around 3 months, as she stopped just sleeping and hated being held.

I know Jennifer, I've never understood it! Dd loves feeding to sleep:)
It's the best way IMO, your both relaxed and snugly

I miss it sometimes. But something had to give with the horrible sensation it gave me.

DS has only had 2 feeds so far today, his early hours of the morning one and his nap time one. He'll likely have one before bed and that'll be it for the day - he's definitely responding to the drop in my supply. Ah well, I was thinking about weaning him anyway.

thats great Jen. it is so much easier to just whoop (and it is whoop in my case) a boob out to settle them.
speaking of which ive just bf Spock to sleep. took ages but only cause she kept doing this weird thing and kept making me laugh.. its hard to explain...but its like she was trying to inhale my whole boob.. she would be attached sucking and then she would open her mouth even wifer and suck with full force and heaps of breast tissue would end up in her mouth. it really ticked. would that have just been her playing? cause im sure she was attched properly before she did that.

I tried hand expressing a bit to get him interests earlier and almost nothing came out. I think we're done. But I'm proud of getting this far :)

On a bad fire day, when i am packing an emergency 'if we have to go' bag, i am grateful that i am breastfeeding and don't have to think about bottles to pack.

Ladies hello! Just dropping in to say hello. DD is almost 11 months and we are still exclusively BF - cows milk in her breakfast cereal but that's the only milk change. She drastically reduced milk feeds at about 9.5 months too and we have about 4 BFs in 24 hours. They are small feeds except for the first one or two feeds of the day. We have been travelling - pretty much living interstate for almost a month over the festive season and during this time she only has 3 feeds sometimes as she won't readily feed if we are out and about and waits until we are at home- wherever that may be at any given day! I've also been told it is an age-related thing.

Jen interestingly my DD is comfort sucking too lately. Not feeding to sleep but reluctant to detach when she's about to go to bed after a feed.

DD2s birthday today. 12months!!

Also means I'm almost up to 4 years uninterrupted since DD1 and DD2 tandem fed.

Ok I've just been confirmed I'm pg, gp tried to tell me to stop bf now. Due to the energy requirements of the body, it will be too much to feed ds whilst pg. Same gp who tried to tell me to only feed from one boob. I'm planning on continuing anyway lol, any tips you guys can give me? I figure if my body can get pg whilst bf, then it can handle bf whilst pg. It would be good if it would take away the little extra in the belly region lol.

WM I can't believe a GP told you that! That level of ignorance within a GP is scary.

WM, I would think just keep doing what you're doing. Keep up your own fluids and energy levels and keep up the bf the way your are now. Only look to change things if its needed...

Late last year I was starting to honestly feel "over" bf dd. 3.5 years was just feeling too much (when combined with a couple of long term issues I have at the moment). Dd and I talked and said maybe it was time to give up boogie and just connect with cuddles. We were even down to only feeding s couple of times a week. Then she got a chest infection. So we didn't stop the feeds. Then she got food poisoning soon after that (poor poppet!). So we kicked up the feeds a bit. And I figured meh, it's not so bad. And she has had a crappy run of health. This past week she got tonsillitis for the first time. Badly. Ended up in hospital severely dehydrated due to the combination of heat and illness after less than a day. It hit her hard. The paed tried all sorts of oral rehydration with her. Hydralyte, water, juice. She wasn't interested. So when the paed was gone for a bit I offered boob. I'd been at work all day and by the time I got home she was beyond it. So I offered for the first time that day. And she drank. And drank. For the first time all day. The paed came back inland seen me feeding and said it was awesome to see, better for her than the other stuff they'd tried and apologised for not asking if I still fed because unfortunately it's anything but the norm to still feed at 3.5+. We were able to bring her home without needing iv rehydration and I spent the next two days at her beck and call. I'm feeling very touched out. Off nd on engorgement as my boobs are back in production overdrive. But my girl has bounced back and is doing well. And I've actually appreciated being able to still feed her for the first time in quite some time. Yay for bf!!

Oh BG I'm so sorry your little poppet has had such a tough run lately, ontop of everything else you have to deal with (not to mention her of course!) you are SUCH a trooper! Good on you for sticking with bf this long it sure is comforting for both when they are unwell. PS I hope you all get a little respite now.

WM yep your Dr is a noob! Actually I can barely believe you were told that, especially being in the medical profession yourself *pfft* to your Dr lol. FWIW I have been pg AND/or bf since June 2006 and I've had no adverse health issues! My babies/toddlers have all weaned a few months into og though but it hasn't really bothered me coz apart from #1 they all got at least a year and I wouldve happily continued if they wanted to. This time actually I am a little relieved almost that ds weaned a few weeks ago as bubby does have suspected IUGR and so of course I want to be doubley reassured she's got every chance to get all she needs :) keep at it with your little man as long as you both want I say :D
