    breastfeeding & pregnancy

    Hi everyone

sorry if this is a silly question and has been asked a million times already!

DD is currently 13mo and we are still BF morning & night - all going well DH & I have tossed up the idea of having another baby sooner rather than later and I'm wondering what that means for BF DD.

I've been getting fairly regular AF pretty much since DD was born - which is crazy in itself as I have PCOS and before DD rarely got AF! Anyway, so I think things are working and getting preg whilst BF shouldn't be too much of an issue

So I'm wondering do I need to / should I start to wean DD or does it not make any difference??? I really have no idea how things like this work as I'd never considered getting pg again whilst still BF!

Any information or advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Fi

    Hi,
If you're having regular, ovulatory periods, then there's no need to wean to fall pregnant (unless you want to of course).
Once you fall pregnant (fingers crossed) you may notice a drop in milk supply and sometimes toddlers will choose to wean at some point during the pregnancy (but sometimes not). Again, it's just up to you whether to continue or not - generally speaking, there's no harm to you, your toddler or your baby to continue feeding.
My DS weaned himself when I was 8-9 weeks pregnant.
    Good luck!

    Hey fi

Sounds like your body knows what it's doing! So I wouldn't be weaning Leila unless you want to, or if you can't fall pregnant after trying for a while.
It's absolutely possible to fall pregnant while breastfeeding, even if you're not having regular periods (2 out of my 3 babies are an example of this!!).

    All the best x

I breastfed DS throughout my pregnancy (and he was feeding up to 5 times a day), and up until six weeks after DD was born. We only stopped feeding because DS fed to sleep and it became impossible to co-ordinate his feeds (which were often long) with DD's frequent feeding.

I fell pg with DD while breastfeeding DS at 11 months and I didnt even have regular AF so its def possible

I ended up having to wean DS, was biting and hitting my breast - like whacking it would make more milk come out :P. It was upsetting for me, he was screaming for days, he was wanting it but nothing, I tried to express but got nothing. I ended up giving him a bottle of formula and he skulled it down in seconds, before then he had always refused a top up from formula.

I ended up seeing my GP who said it wasnt all bad news, that some times breastfeeding can lead to miscarriage as it stimulates the uterus. Either way DS wouldnt feed anymore, I didnt have any other options.

Awesome girls, I knew I'd get some great stories and advice on here! Sounds like there's no hurry to wean so for now we'll keep up the BF and see how it goes....

AF is due in the next few days (I think!) so wont be long and I'll be TTC how exciting!!! OMG I'm so excited.... I could be preggers again soon!!! Ok.. must try not to get carried away
