Can breastfeeding during pregnancy cause miscarriage?

Hello,

I'm 5 weeks pregnant and my 18 month old DS has one feed per day and sometimes one during the night. I have been weaning slowly as he's been willing to let it go but I just don't think he's quite ready to cut the bedtime feed yet....

I just went to the Dr to confirm my (surprise!) pregnancy and was told I have to stop breastfeeding immediately or I could miscarry. Can anyone shed some light on this? is it true?? I have read about so many people breastfeeding through pregnancy so it seemed strange that she said that.

Nup, not true.

Some women with higher risk pregnancies who also have to avoid sex etc or women with a history of premature labour are sometimes advised to wean but in most cases it is fine to continue breastfeeding.

Firstly Congratulations on your pregnancy

As for the BF during pregnancy, I'm not sure what the research says exactly, but I have many friends who have breastfed through-out pregnancy and gone onto tandum feed once the babe was born.

Congratulations Jules! I wish I was closer so I could give you sooo many hugs!!

I think it's amazing that you've fed Mr J for so long, I'm very jealous. But, there's no reason to wean him just because you've gotten pregnant.
He's still only a baby, and if it's really only a bedtime feed and maybe another one then I don't think it's any dramas.

noones ever mentioned this to me. Though we had horrible nappies for a few months, due to my colostrum, and now my milk seems to have stopped (miss E complains my 'bees' arent working)

It's certainly not true.

I am currently pregnant with number 2 and still breastfeeding my preschooler. We have had no issues so far. In fact, I can't imagine anything worse than morning sickness coupled with not being able to silence the older child with the magic boob...

Nope, not true. I got pregnant when DD was 9 months, she's now 12 months at I'm 13w4d along and we've been breastfeeding the whole time

I'm so sorry the Dr scared you.
I fed DD1 all the way through DD2s pregnancy and am still feeding DD2 now, in fact she fed all through the night untill about 10days ago.

Your doctor is misinformed. When my midwife found out I was still feeding, she nearly jumped out of her chair with excitement. I'm 19w5d, and with a past miscarriage under my belt.

It's definitely ok to BF while pregnant. I BF DD1 all through my pregnancy with DD2

Nope not true at all. My boys are nearly 4 and other is 29 months and DS1 BF all way thru my preg and only weaned 2 weeks ago!!

Go and see another dr. This one sounds like she has a very poor grasp on bfing and pg and I wouldn't be going to her for either!

No, not true. I fed all through my pregnancy with dd and partly through my pregnancy with ds2. I was never told anything along those lines.

It's a shame so many medical and health professionals are ill-informed about breastfeeding. With DD3 my doctor told me that i was taking nutrients away from my unborn baby by breastfeeding the toddler. This just demonstrates a lack of knowledge of breastfeeding and physiology and i actually gave her the breastfeeding article from the ABA (...pregnancy & beyond) and told her i had fed through one pregnancy and tandem fed already with the older children.

Then i found myself a new doctor.

Perfectly normal to feed a little one at the same time as being pregnant.
