So DD is on cows milk and has a great diet at the moment. Eats anything and everything.
The problem is for the last few weeks she constantly has a runny nose and a bit of a cough. Kind of like a congested sounding one.
Is this because of dairy? MIL keeps ramming down my throat that her kids didnt have any dairy at this age as it could lead to asthma and its the dairy causing her runny nose? WTF? Is that true? I thought they need dairy for their bones to grow, etc.
She never used to have a problem with dairy (ie, yoghurt and cheese). The cows milk and day care kind of coincided at the same time so am not sure which it is? Should I go back to formula and cut the cows milk out until the runny nose is gone?
I thought it was pretty common knowledge that dairy is mucus forming. If the runny nose has mucus in it than I agree with your MIL that dairy could very well be contributing to it or at the very least making bubs more susceptible to picking up colds. That doesn't mean that kids should never have dairy it just means that too much is mucus forming. The best thing for strong bones is magnesium, it's actually what gives your bones more density... not calcium, besides the calcium in dairy is not absorbed that well into your body, calcium from other things such as nuts and other milks like oat or rice milk is absorbed much better.
Cherished- I am with you with the mucous and dairy thing as I remember as kids if we had a cold we werent allowed to have icecream or milk as it made us worse. I was just a bit funny on the asthma causing bit?
Could it be the type of milk? ie. Should I try other forms of milk to see if it makes a difference?
Hi sorry I've taken to long to reply! I woudl say that there are non dairy alternatives as hepas of people raise their kids vegan, I'd sugest to google it
So turns out she has a chest infection. On antibiotics. She did a sneeze this morning and the poor thing had streams of snot coming out.
She is happier during the day but as soon as she lies down she is miserable. Not great as you cant sleep standing up!
I bought some rice and oat milk today from supermarket (thanks Jols -cant believe how many different choices of milk there are) so I will give those a whirl.
Thanks again for everyones advice. No CC for us this week. Lucky I am on holidays
