Dummy for BF baby

I'm going to bite the bullet and try my DD on a dummy. She's got reflux and I need all the help i can get atm. We're feeding with nipple shields and I'm paranoid about stuffing up our BFing but my IBCLC thinks it shouldn't be a big issue. My question is does it make a difference what kinda dummy? I've heard about flat tip or cherry tip, would I be better with a certain shape or brand?

The best type are cherry shaped. The Happy Baby ones were always the ones recommended for BFing babies but I'm not sure if they're around again since the recall? Otherbrands (such as Tommee Tippee) do cherry shaped ones too.

We gave DD a dummy while she was b/f, we gave her a small round advent one because that's what she'd take. Up until the point where she weaned herself off the dummy, she refused to have anything else. Your bubba might decide for herself! It had no effect on b/f for us.

I never did any research on the best shape but I went with the Tommee Tippee flat ones. We held off with a dummy for just over 1 month but in the end DD was using me as a dummy. I bf DD until she was 12 months and we had a few attachment issues then thrush etc but I think that was just from us getting a bit lazy with positioning etc and not the dummy. 90% of the time we were fine

DD had a dummy from about 3-4weeks. She ws breastfed for 11months. the only thing that stopped us was me going back to work and ym supply disapperaing as I couldnt express enough. DD got frustrated with me not having as much and prefered a bottle.

We had the avent flat ones.

I'm not sure of the name but i went on looks. i don't like big mumma dummies (the outside bit) and wanted something bit more subtle.

my little one used one from 6 weeks (she had colic and it really helped) to about 4 months when she just rejected it. would be nice if she still took it though...

We are using the NUK starlight one's for DD's the orthadontic shaped one's, neither took a round/cherry shaped one. Both were few by nipple shields, DD2 still is, but she will only take a dummy if she wants to suck and isn't hungry, don't bother attempting to put one in at any other time, she'll just spit it out

Classic babe!!! I didn't use one for J and Izzy started using one at 16 mths (don't ask) but we always liked the ortho Tommee Tippee ones.

Ds uses the cherry ones, Coles have some branded ones now, they are smaller than the tommie ones. It helps with his colic and reflux. If he is hungry he won't take it only when he needs to suck for comfort.

All three of my bubs have had dummies and it didn't affect BF'ing . DD uses Avent dummies (as did DS2). DS1 used Nuk ones, but they are expensive!

Make sure you choose a brand and style that has been around for a while because it's stressful if you lose dummies and can't buy replacements!

Sorry your DD has reflux . I know of a great paediatric chiro that has great success treating reflux babies, let me know if you want the details

DS is BF'd using a nipple shield as well and uses the avent flat dummy only for comfort, as soon as hes settled or asleep he spits it out. he refused to take the round dummy also so id say ur DD will choose which one she prefers. more to the point the dummy has not effected his feeding

We went for orthadontic ones too after trying all the others .... DD will only play with them and suck on them on her terms so Mummy was the dummy for a long long time.

Hmmm ok so tried offering her a cherry one... suck suck SPIT. Tried again, same result. Is there any trick to this? Or is she just saying nooo mummy nooo not that/any dummy?

DD only takes one when she isnt hungry but wants to suck most of the time she doesnt even use it

I have to hold DD's dummy in til she's settled. Unless she's actually spitting it out.
She prefers the cherry ones, but the cheapest possible, coz the teat is softer. I have similar ones with a harder teat & she hates them. DS was the same. He had one for 4 months, BF for 23 months.
DD1 prefered the flat tip ones. Might give them a go actually. She might be able to hold onto them better...

if you put it in bubs mouth and then tap on the top it can encourage bub to suck on it.

I had to persevere with holding the dummy in a little with my boys. DD took 3 months of me persevering until she took one haha! But I'm glad she eventually did because she settle SO much easier with a dummy.

I found all my bubs choked/gagged on the cherry teat dummies. They all seem to have preferred the flat silicone ones.
