Yes i was surprised at the british attitude... and offended by the man who said something along the lines of "well it should be banned, i mean men can see and get ideas" (sorry if i misquoted this, hard to catch what he said but this is how i took it).
Overall wonderfully balanced documentary, showing both the benfits and challenges. Also i never knew there was a boob shaped bottle, great idea.
Also Baby amore lovely to see you around and your twins look gorgeous
Sorry DM I iq'd it and dont know how to get it off the box onto a disc or tape or even a usb stick. Hopefully Glamourcide finds it online somewhere for you!
I was impressed at all of the women in the doco. Very inspiring. I expressed full time so was in awe of all of them and esp of where and when they got their boobs out... it was great
Yes that man that said it should be banned is a moron!!
My DS is 4months old and exclusively BF, I'm absolutely loving it! and I intend to BF, well indefinitely, BUT...
I was just watching a show about extraordinary breastfeeding, one of the stories was about a woman who was still BF her daughter at 7 years old. Sorry if I offend anyone, but I really struggled with the thought of that. She believed children should wean themselves when they are ready.
Another of the stories was a woman weaning her 2yr old twins, I felt sad for her to be weaning and am dreading the day I have to wean DS, (if he doesn't do it himself) I think it will be very sad to lose the special time But I personally, can't imagine still feeding him at 7 yrs old.
The third story was a mother who continued to feed her DS, I think he was about 4, to keep her supply for a 12 month old little girl she was adopting. This I understood completely, I was not challenged with the thought of feeding a 4yr old like I was with the 7yr old. I did wonder though, if I was to adopt a 12month old, would I feel comfortable trying to BF? ...Still undecided, maybe you can't imagine until you are in that position??
The show really made me think.
I was just wondering what other peoples thoughts were on this?
I saw this show too
The two twins, felt sorry for them wanting mummys milk but not being able to have it but they seemed to adapt really quickly!
The mum that was BF her 7yr old, no offence to anyone but I thought it was wrong! It made me uncomfortable seeing her in bed with her mum breastfeeding!
I thought with the little girl who was adopted that it seemed more for the mother than the little girl, the mum kept pushing breast feeding onto the little girl and she didn't want it, I was wondering why she didn't express milk instead of pushing her to take to the breast when she was used to a bottle.
It was a very interesting show and interesting to see how differently breastfeeding is viewed in Britain.
No offence intended by posting my views
Quite a long time ago now ((about 17 years ago really) I attended a Nursing Mothers meeting (Now Australian Breastfeeding Association) on "Breastfeeding the older child" Breastfeeding my 10 week old (and not certain how long that was going to last) I imagined that they would be discussing feeding babies over 6mnths old. My eyes probably nearly popped out of my head and rolled across the carpet when the counsellor spoke about feeding her four and a half year old kinder girl. I kept a low profile but remember thinking "Well, that's OK for *women like that*, but I would never feed a four and a half year old".
Guess what? I did. My amazing son taught me lots of things about mothering - that it was normal to breastfeed past 4 was only one of them. Mothering pushes out boundaries far further than we ever thought they could go. My experience has taught me best to never make judgements. As a mother I have found my self doing *a lot* of things I never thought I would do.
The normal age of weaning (see Kathy Dettwyler's work) is estimated to be between 2.5 years and 7 years. Very seldom do we see normal breastfeeding in our culture - only 20% make it to 12 mnths, and only about 1% to the World Health recommended 2 years.
I wasn't meaning to pass judgement, just putting my thoughts and initial feeling out there and wanting other's opinions, always happy to be enlightened!
I have a 16yr old and an 18yr old and am well aware of how you think you will be a certain "type" of parent, or say you will or will not do something as a parent and it all changes once you're there
The show was replayed on Lifestyle YOU on Sunday so might even get another run. I've recorded it to watch when I get a spare hour. Haha.
BTW I was exactly like Barb, thought it was *other* women who bf children who had teeth (and could eat steak, I believe was my choice of words). Wouldn't be me. She says, whose four year old only self-weaned recently!
Don't knock it until you try it, would be my advice. All sorts of your ideas change once you get down the line and bfing is only the start!
