BF newborn and EBM for toddler? Possible?

Hi everyone!

I BF my first until he self weaned at 7 months. I'm expecting #2 in June 2012 and will BF this one also. I had a great supply with DS, so I expressed and froze some for when I went back to work.

I would love to be able to offer DS EBM when I am breastfeeding but I am worries that I won't have enough for #2 (who of course will be my main priority for breast milk).

Have other mama's done this?? What have your experiences been? Is it possible or should I keep my BM for #2 only?

good question! I just bought an electric pump as my son is 2 and I failed him with breastfeeding and would love to give him some too, I would also love to hear if its a wise choice.

I am still BFing my DD and will be BFing a newborn in January. If DD is still keen, i will BF both of them. Everything i have read, says that it is just a matter of demand and supply- so if your newborn is feeding and you are expressing you should produce enough for both of them.

I don't see why not. I planned to do that with my boys but the biggest issue has been having the time to express with a young baby and a toddler on the loose, so it hasn't happened so far!

I think you'll be right, it will just be whether Master L has gone off the taste of BM, but you could use it on his cereal etc

People happily BF twins - so you should be able to make enough. Whether you have the time for much expressing with a toddler and a newborn is another issue entirely though!

Yes I guess it does depend if DS even likes the taste AND if I have time to express having a newborn and toddler. Didn't even think of that!!

You may also find that when DS sees you BFing bub#2 he will want to have a go too.
I think you just have to see what happens.

Well ds2 was 16 months when dd was born and in those early months I had bad oversupply so I used to express my let down so that dd didn't choke and that was enough for a cup of milk for ds2. But I didn't continue with it for too long so I don't know about doing it long term.

I'm doing this now. Ds is 6 weeks and dd 17 months. Dd is getting the ebm in her sippy cup and seems to prefer the mummy milk Over the cows milk. I've got. My freezer stash up now so I'm just enjoying the suPply while it lasts.

i think the biggest concern you will have is whether your ds will drink it, i dont think you will have any dramas making enough for both at all. i am feeding dd atm and im hoping she self weans while im pg (mainly cos its hurting so much to feed her atm) but if she doesnt i will probably feed her when the newby comes, but after the baby has had what it wants itms.
my friends ds wanted on when the new baby came along, but he didnt stick with it, he found it awkward to re-learn the latch and he said it was too slow, so only lasted a few days

Thanks for your input ladies. Yeah I might try and mix EBM with cows milk if he doesn't like the taste. Will be interesting to see if he wants to have a go!

I had heaps of EBM for #1 stored away for when I was back at work, so not too worried about supply.

I'm really keen to give it a go! I was disappointed that DS weaned so early so I'm looking forward to getting him back on it for a bit longer. Even if it's just to help his immune system over next winter..
