    gagging/choking on solids

so DS has been on solids now for a couple of months. the other day i went out and bought the heinz 7-9 months variety as he is now 8 months old. anyway i tried him on it and he started gagging then choking a little bit. if we give him puree he is fine. this stuff is mashed a little and has a bit more lumpy texture to the puree. just wondering if this is normal or not and if we should stick to the puree for a bit longer or persist a bit with the new texture.

    TIA.

    cheers xx

my DD has gagged and chocked on everything since she was born, fingers, dummies, bottles and pureed food and lumpy food as she got older.... i had her observed by a speech and development team and they said that her gag reflex is really strong and to keep persistenting and trying and eventually the gag reflex will de sensitise and low and behold at 8 mths she can now drink from a sippy eat food chew on fingers etc......its up to you wether you stick to puree food or lumpy food but i think it will de sensitise with time..and being 1st time lumpy food maybe was just a bit of a shock for him..

Babies gag reflex is really close to the front of their tongue/ mouth so that any object that comes close to that gets expelled quickly - it moves back over time.
Remember that actual choking is when they make no sound because their little wind pipe is blocked.

Gagging is good! It means they are getting rid of it.

    Still scary though!!!!

Have you thought about baby-led solids?

Tristan didn't tolerate lumps either so I decided to just let him go for it and he took to BLS from puree really well.

DD did the same. She didn't take to solids well at all and was 8 months by the time we had her happily taking puree. Was about 10 months by the time lumps were ok with her.
As long as he is happy and putting on weight then I wouldn't worry about it babe. Some take longer than others, just offer the lumpier food every now and then. He will get there!
