    Gassy baby-peppermint tea?

For me of course not my ds!!

He's 2 weeks old and the mchn called him colicky....but I did a bit of research and I just think he's windy/gassy. He's super hard to burp and makes constant "eh eh" sounds after a feed. He also wakes and cries for poos and farts. I assume it's going to get better because right now his digestive system is so immature and I have a fast let down and flow and he just gulps it down....and he's a relatively fast feeder in general. So I was thinking, if peppermint tea is good for adults for wind and ymmv upsets-if I find a non caffeinated one, will this help ds?

Don't know anything about peppermint tea but just wanted to add something else in there... My DS (8 weeks) has been really windy too. Poor love was really unsettled, woke almost hourly to try and get the wind out and would grunt, groan, cry and strain every time he needed to fart. I've tried all sorts of things but what's ended up making the difference is going off dairy. Took about 2 weeks of being completely dairy (and soy - the protein is the same shape and will also upset this little tummies sensitive to cow's milk protein) free and it's been tough - I'd kill for a latte and a cheese sandwich! But it's made all the difference and I have a much happier little man for it.

My friend whose littl one had the same issue said she was able to go back on dairy at about 5 months and it didn't seem to have as much of a negative effect, as long as she didn't OD.

May not be your little man's issue of course, but after weeks of 'windy baby' stress, I thought it might be worth throwing out there.

GL Hun, hope your little guy gets some relief, and you get some sleep. Xox

IMO it wouldn't be any worse than gripe water or infacol.

That's interesting Santosha, thanks. The mchn said it's generally due to the maternal diet as well....he's actually sleeping pretty well and despite waking for poos/farts he resettles and goes back to sleep. I just thought it was strange because we struggle to burp him. If it continues I'll def consider cutting out dairy but I'm already gluten free so hesitant to muck around too much.

Just throwing it out there... but I wonder if it would help if YOU drank the peppermint tea?

My ds was the same and I always thought it was just their little bodies getting used to digesting things (it's a whole new experience). I went off dairy and gluten for different reasons and found it didn't really make a difference...although ds was 6 weeks by then. I also drink a truckload of peppermint tea! I'd be interested to hear how you go.

The CMHN told me to drink chamomile tea for the same issues...
It seemed to help, in that if I didn't we would have a terrible night (loads of eh eh sounds) and if I did we would have a bad night!

The gut has a first matuation around 8-9 weeks (so I was told by bothmy osteo and cmhn) and she improved then!

We tried lots of things though!

I was warned by a few midwives not to drink peppermint tea if breastfeeding. Apparently the menthol decreases milk supply and may cause stomach upsets for the baby. However, I did read somewhere that it is okay, as long as you keep an eye on your supply and don't drink gallons of it. Personally, I didn't drink it as the midwived seemed pretty serious about it.

I was also told to drink lots of chamomile tea. So perhaps try that and see how you go.

Not sure about the wind association, but my LC told me not to drink peppermint tea while I was breastfeeding because it can reduce your supply. No idea why or how, but she was pretty clear cut about it.
