How much EBM for a 2 week old?

Hi guys, im currently expressing for DD3 until our thrush is cleared and her tongue tie is snipped next week ( my poor nipples are a mess )
Im expressing about 100mls per session (every 3 hours) how much should she be taking?
sometimes she will take 50mls, other times only about 30mls. is this enough or should i work harder to wake her up to take more? We do the whole feed, change nappy and wwake up a little and feed again routine

Also, can you express for too long? as in, she'll get used to a bottle and not go back on the breast next week? im still offering breast feeds,every 3rd feed atm, its very painful atm and i cant ssee it changing to every second feed in the next few days, but i dont want her to refuse breast feeds when we're ready to go back full time.

It is possible that she will get confused with the bottle but you can get help from an LC to reestablish her on the boob if it comes to that.
I think there is also a Medela system for it.

I think DD was taking 50-70 at around 1 month so it sounds like BC is probably taking enough. Savour the extra milk for the freezer stash?

I think as long as she continues to put on weight let her lead?

As for breast refusal, I'm terrified of that too, i advise put her to the breast as often as you can handle, although I have been told breast refusal happens more with older bubs.. Also, we use a fast flow teat so he doesn't have to concentrate on sucking basically it's guzzled down.. The idea is for him to not notice the bottle teat if that makes sense?

makes sense blessed, im using avent bottles and the 0+ teats, i might buy the next one up. she's getting weighed tomorrow, but todays the been the first full day of epressing so i dont know if it will tell me much.

DD was taking 50-60mls then so your little princess seems to be doing just fine

I expressed for 5 weeks almost exclusively and we have an awesome BF relationship now at 12 weeks. DD has been back on the breast for about 5 weeks now and I had my doubts at first but besides a few little struggles (where I just had to give her a bottle and express again then offer the breast at the next feed), it's been fine!

That's probably the idea with my little one, he's having top ups because he's not putting on weight so we are trying to get as much into him as possible. Also my milk supply was crap there for a while I didn't want him to concentrate on the bottle and realise that's where his food is coming from so he has a breast feed, bottle then breast.. Hopefully he associates the full feeling with being on the breast.

I actually bought the new Medela 'Calma' teat which is more like breastfeeding - they have to work for their feed It seemed to work well with my DD

I'm not too sure about the amounts of EBM sorry hun, but I think if she is doing all the right things then there's no need to worry. If she was feeding from the breast you wouldn't know how much she was taking in anyway...

Just a thought, can you BF with nipple shields while you wait for the thrush to clear up and her tongue tie to be snipped? They were the difference between me being able to BF and not BF'ing DS in those first couple of months when he couldn't attach.

I would definitely try a nipple sheild. it might still hurt a little but it will take away the majority of pain. I used one for a month with ds1 while we battled thrush.

it sounds like she's getting enough milk, means you'll get an awesome stash happening!

Skye, as you know I exclusively bf with a nipple shield for the first 5 months. DD is now on the booby at 9 months and has been for 4 months now I also used a Medela Calma bottle for a few weeks before she went onto the shield. I used a Medela shield, it is very thin and has a spot for them to smell your breast instead of plastic. More than happy to answer an questions about either, and if you want lend you both as well so you can try before you buy

DD2 had bottles more or less every feed for eight weeks due to attachment problems. Went on to the boob absolutely no problem (we just had to wait until her mouth was big enough). Though we did use a supply line as I didn't have enough milk. But given you're just waiting for your thrush to clear up I don't think you'll need anything that drastic.

Guidelines say that you should be able to re-establish breastfeeding fairly easily up to 12 weeks so don't believe the naysayers who say that a few bottles will lead to nipple confusion. Not true in my experience or in many others' experience.

Oh and DD didn't take my nipple shieldless until 5 months, but not because of the shield or bottle itms. She had overlapping head plates, jaw and neck issues, hip dysplasia...she had extensive chiro work done during that time to correct all her problems, that was why she took so long.

At that age dd was taking anywhere from 30-80ml.
