When I first start out bfing a newbie, I drink heaps too, 3+ltrs. Generally I could drink a 500ml bottle of water each time they have a big feed. As time goes on it lessens, though not until they really cut back, usually once solids start and they are having less bf's a day. I am still drinking at least 2 1/2ltrs now and DS2 is 15mths old, though he's teething and has a bit of a cold, so is going through a not-eating-food-but-bfing-tonnes-more phase, he's feeding 2hrly at night again and usually about 4 times through the day. All up at least 6 times in 24hrs. I have noticed I've had headaches the past few days...maybe that's why?! I need to drink more...or maybe sleep more! 1-2hrly wake ups are killing me!
I have a *big* cup of water and a large cup of decaf every feed, to make sure I'm replacing what I lose ... I do this when I'm at work and expressing, too.
Yes, it leads to a fair amount of peeing, but it stops me getting dehydrated, dry headaches, and so forth!
In the early days i got lots of engorgement from drinking too much! Now I just drink to thirst. Ds would still feed 6-8 times a day, and I have a pump bottle of water a day normally, plus some herbal tea.
