Im considering mix feeding ds2 from 6 months and i was wondering what peoples experiences of this are. Im thinking of doing one bottle of formula during the day and the others breastfeeds. Will it affect my supply too much or will my body just get used to dropping one day feed? Also for people who have done this did you find that bubs prefered the bottle after awhile? If so how long did that take?
With the bottle a baby is going to get the milk alot faster, it comes quickly and fills them up. Is quicker to feed. When choosing a formula ask which is best to mix with formula those that are easily digested, speak to your chemist.
With breastfeeding, babies have to milk at he breast, so it takes longer to feed as the milk comes down. There may be a reduction in milk as you drop one feed.
As I went back to work DD was on EBM from the bottle and BFing a couple of times a day from very early on. This went fine until 6 months when she pretty much started dropping feeds at every opportunity. I think she just grew out of the "I like booby for comfort" and realised that the bottle and breast was simply a means of getting food and wanted it as quickly as possible so just wanted the bottle. I did also fall pregnant so the couple of BF's she was doing a day started getting rejected then too. I think it's totally possible to continue BF and bottle feeding if you set the standard that set feeds are done set ways so your LO knows what to expect.
I mix fed DD1 from just after 6 months. She was actually faster a BF then drinking a bottle (but I have a fast let down). I choose to drop the BF before bed feed. I never had any issue with her wanting the bottle more then breast or vice versa. As long as she got a feed she was happy. My supply never dropped because I still expressed before going to bed anyway. DD1 did however self weaned from the breast when she was just over 9 months and then self weaned from the bottle just after she turned 1. She still drinks milk 2-3 times a day but she just likes it in a cup more. I guess I am saying it was easy for me because she was a very go with the flow bubs (still is).
We had BF issues from DD's second week so I used a mix of BF and formula from then on. I mainly BF but if I hadn't expressed enough for a top up or I wanted to give her a bottle feed, then we used formula. It worked like a dream! My breasts adjusted fine and DD self weaned from BF (she was down to just the morning BF and 1-2 formula bottles a day) 2 weeks shy of her first birthday
