Great advice from the other ladies
The only thing I can offer is to this -
Will I ever be able to feed him "madonna" style if he learns "football" style?

As I said the frustration is that sometimes I can get him onto the breast (like this morning he fed well "madonna style" without hurting me - a miraculous fluke as I was in a shopping centre parents room!), but mostly it doesn't happen. I am desperately hoping this will settle down in a few more weeks (months?). I feel like an idiot not being able to get him to latch on after all this time and afterall, it is my second time round
My DS2 fed mostly football style for the first couple of months and as he got older we were able to feed in other positions (mostly madonna style) much more easily.
So I agree with KMN, I would take heart - if he's getting it right some of the time, it's a good starting point
Best of luck with it all.

ETA - I just wanted to add, re your comment
I feel like an idiot not being able to get him to latch on after all this time and afterall, it is my second time round
I am fulltime expressing now for a baby who couldn't (& then wouldn't ) latch - my 4th, so you'd think I'd have it down, right? Nope And every LC I saw said it was her, not me.
Every baby brings us a different experience - so take it a bit easier on yourself
