Prepacked / frozen foods that aren't horribly bad for DS
Hello all,
As much as I would love to be the type of mum that hand makes my own sausage rolls, musli bars etc, it ain't me. I love cooking, but I don't have the time and with a new bub on the way I can't see it changing any time soon.
I like to have my freezer stocked with lunch and snack foods for Mitchell. I know there are heaps of bad frozen or pre-made options in the supermarket. However surely not all of them are full of sugar / fat / head exploding ingredients.
So, any suggestions of brands of snack / lunch foods that are ok for him to eat. He has no allergies.
I'm thinking in the areas of musli bars, sausage rolls, party pies, mini-quiches. Any other suggestions would be great.
I often buy DD Heinz toddler snacks - fruit bars, vegemite & cheese breadsticks, muesli bars, etc. They are a bit pricey but are great serving sizes for toddlers. I haven't checked all the in and outs of the ingredients but they seem fine and DD has been eating them for months now without any crazy reactions. I've recently started giving her Carmans muesli bars which again, are pricey, but yummo. I also buy some 100% natural fruit staps from the health food isle. There is lots of good snacks in the health food section but be prepared to pay a bit more
Popcorn is a good one as are rice cakes or rice crackers. Just be careful with the salt content.
I always have a stash of Rafferty's Gardens sachets handy for a quick healthy snack. DD loves the sweet ones and I can occasionally sneak in a savory one too Vaalia now do their yoghurt in sachets too.
I usually have a supply of zucchini slice in the freezer for an easy lunch or snack. I add grated carrot to mine as well to sneak in extra vegies.
Sultanas are a winner in our house too and grapes - both easy fruits to have at home or while out.
Cheese and crackers are probably DD's favourite snack though. She even loves a good brie and a bit of pate! She gets that from her mummy
Some of the snap frozen pkt vegies are ok, you can steam them in microwave in 3 or 4 minutes. My LO likes them and will eat tthem while i am getting rest of dinner ready.
I just wanted to say: don't feel bad about giving frozen/prepackaged food to your LO.
I usually freeze small portions of leftovers (that he's enjoyed) into little pots that can be defrosted and reheated. I also have a stash of the "organic" (I don't know how organic they are though LOL) baby foods in the pantry. You never know when you are going to be stuck with a demanding bub who wants something to eat RIGHT NOW. And honestly, I would rather reach for a jar (or steam up some frozen veges in the microwave) than suffer a meltdown by our little major.
