    Secondhand breast pump...

So I start back at work in about a month and a half and so I'm starting to try and organise myself a breastpump so I can pump at work and DH can give DS EBM during the day (he is going to be a SAHD). Anyway, I was all prepared to buy one but now two different friends have offered me use of their used ones. It would seriously be awesome to save that money, but in my mind, I feel like a breastpump is a one person thing, but is that right?

what kind of pumps? I think the first thing is to make sure you have the right one for your circumstances.
You can use someone else's pump. obviously you'll want to make sure it's clean - but you would anyway.

Yeah, I used one with DS, too. It's fine. It's just milk - which you feed to your baby, afterall

    oh cool, that's good!

one is an electric avent, and the other is a medela - i think the medela is manual.

I have a medela manual... it is ok for casual pumping but a fair bit of work if you want to be a regular pumper.

I wish i had thought of getting a second hand one when i got mine.. good ones are exxy! I would borrow both and see what suits you.. I found the electric Avent really good, but some people prefer manual as its more controllable. I just hot washed mine, and its been lent out to a few mums and come back.. they don't even recommend sterilising any more as long as it has a good hot soapy wash (though you can serialise if you want).

if you're pumping a lot, I'd consider getting a high-grade double electric pump. you might find the smaller ones work out ok, but it might also be a lot of messing around. Give them a go and see, anyway.

I am using a friends avent electric pump. If u are concerned about it u can buy new spare parts for the pump online?

This website sells the parts and it would be a lot Cheaper than buying a new pump. I'm intending to replace the spare parts when I give it back to my friend as I have been using it once a day and will be using full time three days a week when I return to work next month.

You just need to make sure it's sterile, the parts that get the milk and touch your skin. They share them in hospitals, they are just washed and sterilized in between in use. If you are really worried about it you can normally buy spare parts in the way of tubing and containers.

I started with a secondhand medela mini electric (still have it as a back up pump) until I bought the medela swing and I love them. Just got both mine back from loaning them out to another BB member as I wasn't needing them for a few months.
