Study looking at "Babies Fed Breastmilk by Breast Versus by Bottle"

Thought this was a very interesting article, especially for those of us who have EE'd. My EBM-fed DS was a very podgy fellow (75-90th percentile for weight), and TBH, I'd always kinda wondered if that was cos I (with the best of intentions) had shovelled every precious ml of EBM into his little gob! Interestingly, my DD who has been a stellar BFer is actually even podgier (95-97th percentile for weight!) and has never had a bottle at all. So I had been thinking that at the end of the day, regardless of delivery method, it hadn't made a great deal of differenc to the weight of my two children.

Hence I was very intrigued to read this study. While there is a weight difference between the two groups, it wasn't statistically significant.... but it was pretty small groups too. Anyway, enjoy

    Thanks for posting Belfie

Two of my children received BM, both for 14 months, one by breast and one by bottle. Both were (still are) very similar in build, their older two siblings who were predominantly FF are slightly heavier in build.

I had always heard that bottle fed babies tended to be a little heavier, it was explained to me by one CHN that bottle fed babies tended to guzzle more.. but perhaps not, I wonder whether it is actually due to the difference between formula & BM?

This is what I have gathered on formula vs breastmilk. 0-3 months, bf babies tend to gain more rapidly. 3-6 months things swing a bit the other way, 6-12 months ff babies gain more.
I think bottle feeding *can* mean babies are overfed and trained to override the natural 'stop' signals when they're fulll, which may be one reason ff babies are more like to be obese as adults. But I think diffrences in content also makes a difference - the fats etc are totally different.

Anyway, interesting study, thanks! I presume if there is a difference it must be due to the delivery.
