my 2.5yo has started to hurt as she cant attach properly when feeding. she starts out ok, then dozes off (has boob before bed) and clamps her teeth down.
I cant break the latch unless I wake her, or she falls into deep sleep and comes off herself.
Does this mean her jaw is changing?
We still enjoy feeding, but I cant deal with the pain!
At this point we moved boob until earlier and fed on the loungeroom floor so he was awake, and worked on "no toothmarks". But by the time my DS was 3.5 even when he really tried he hurt too much, and we weaned then. I would first look at stopping the feed while she's drowsy rather than completely asleep. Explain to her beforehand what you are going to do.
I don't think it's a physical change, it's just, as you say, she's falling asleep and hurting you to stay on. If it's not working like this, you could try changing the context of your feeds, like kmn suggests. She's old enough to understand that it hurts and to try and open wider, attach without teeth, etc.
You can establish some rules with her, so she knows she can feed so long as you're not in pain. Good luck with it
We have stopped feeding to sleep for this reason. She now has boob earlier or in the morning when she's wide awake. She knows if she hurts she is off straight away
thanks everyone.
I might shift the boob to before tv (its currently dinner/shower/TV/teeth/boob/bed) but we are also trying to get her into her own bedroom/bed so Im hesitant about too many changes at once
Shifting it would be less of a change than taking it away altogether.
Is there a couch in her room - so you could feed her in her room but not in her bed?
