Today i got advised to wean my two year old by a doctor today! Not IMPRESSED

Hi everyone,
during a visit to a GP bulk billing clinic today i had a female doctor tell me that i should wean DD2 who is turning 2 on Sunday because it is "really taxing on your body"!! I did not go for anything to do with breastfeeding i have a cold and needed a certificate for work, she told me i could take panadol if i needed it and i said i was still breastfeeding so i wouldn't take anything stronger anyway and that was when she told me!!
I was furious!! How dare she comment on my breastfeeding and she is supposed to be a health professional!!!!!

It is no wonder the breast feeding rates are so low in Australia when you have morons giving out advice like that.

Its pretty sad when so called health care professionals doll out this kind of 'advice', especially to many women who trust and believe what they say! Apparently feeding ones child using your body allows any Tom, Frank and Harry to pass judgement on you and what you do with your boobies! You know you're doing the right thing, so pfffft to dumb people grrrrr.

Why is it any more taxing on your body than say, working, doing housework, running around after kids. She should have advised a cleaner instead!

Breastfeeding is just not valued, in fact it's frowned upon...so weird!

I am sorry your GP was not more supportive... this is one reason I really value my relationship with the ABA, the support I recieve there just doesn't seem to be available elsewhere in my social circles - some are coming around - slowly.

Great point!
What a narrow-minded view she has of bf. This comment shows that she is ignorant about the benefits of bf for women.
And she probably has a limited understanding of the benefits to toddlers of extended bf.
I'm glad you aren't going to take her 'medical' advice!

My mum has made comment before and advised me that it's no longer of any nutritional benefit... ummmmm I beg to differ and told her that there was in fact EVERY benefit to him still and that the WHO recommends minimum 2 years. The thing is... my mum has done health studies etc and quotes many "health" things to me and the WHO etc... so ya know, just can never win really huh.

Just quote WHO next time and say that you still have a year left to go to reach the recommended time frame for BF... And she should know that being a GP

I don't understand Drs at the moment. IMO they are letting themselves down.

A similar thing happened to me withh DD. at 6 months she weighed 8.6kg and she still weighed the same at 19 months. CHN told me to stop BF and put her on cows mil even though she hated the taste.. My fave Dr who has since retired asked me a few questions. (chn told me to take her for blood tests ect ect as something was very wrong) He was watched Olivia for a while and said is she this active at home? yes. he said well there's your problem.. She is a very active toddler and she is chewing through more calories then she is taking it. He just said to increase her cheese and other dairy foods as he knew she didn't like cows milk

So anyways.. Well done on Breastfeeding for as long as you have. I miss it and wished I could have done it for longer but DD weaned herself at 21 months

Unfortunately i was feeling so ill i couldn't come up with anything fitting to say to her!!
I wish society would wake up and realise how important Breastfeeding is and that it is a normal part of life!!
Our babies are just too precious!
Boobies forever in our house, until my beautiful girl chooses on her own to stop...

when ever i tell anyone im still breast feeding DD who is 2 and a half...especially while im pregnant i always get told i should stop.....but when i went to see my midwife the other month she actually told me she thought it was great and well done.....was a surprise to say the least! sorry you had to deal with negative comments!!!

i always feel the need to justify why i am still bfeeding my almost 2 year old also. ppl just expect you to stop. just as a matter of interest.. what are the health or other benefits of breastfeeding a toddler? there is a lot of info about bfeeding newborn but not toddlers. obviously, the bond and emotional side of things but anything else?
