    Cows milk 12months +

I would love your opinion on what I should do.... DS2 has just turned 12 months and I would like to wean him off the breast but he won't drink cows milk. We have dropped down to two breastfeeds a day (upon waking and before bed) and I would like to drop another but he won't drink cows milk or formula. He will have it on his cereal, he will eat yoghurt, cheese, cream cheese etc. How much dairy will he need every day to make up for not drinking milk? I have been giving him a banana smoothie (just a banana blended with milk) after lunch which he seems to enjoy and I will try to reduce to size of the banana to get him more use to the cows milk but I would like to drop the morning feed next week and want to be sure he is getting enough dairy

    Any advise is appreciated. TIA

Hey georgi, i'm no expert but what you're doing sounds pretty good considering the circumstances, you can't make him have it. But he's getting anyhow I think you're doing great at getting him to have dairy in other ways.

As to if it's enough i'm not sure, hopefully someone will come with a bit more of an idea

He doesn't need to drink milk - if he gets calcium from other sources don't worry about it. Breastmilk isn't really about calcium, it's about all the other stuff in there, if that makes sense, so it's not necessary to replace it with other milk necessarily at this age, so long as he's eating a balanced diet.

    Yep, that.
Totally unnecessary for him to drink cows milk at all. Follow his cues - if he doesn't like it, don't give it to him. (I hate cows milk i na cup.... will drink it on cereal or eat yoghurt, but drinking a glass of milk makes me want to vomit).
You could try rice milk, oat milk, soy milk or goat's milk... So long as he is eating enough food, there is no reason why he needs milk at all.

Georgi when i was worried about DD2 not getting enough calcium i was told the following........

Children 1 to 3 years need about 500 mg of calcium per day, while children 4 to 8 years need about 700 mg.

A 250ml glass of whole cows' milk contains about 165 calories, 9.5 gm fat , 8 gm of protein and 305 mg calcium. Low-fat milks contain at least as much calcium as whole cows' milk.
Toddlers can get their calcium from drinking milk and/or eating foods that contain calcium.
    Other foods that contain calcium
    Food Amount of Calcium
Cheddar cheese - 20 gm 130 mg calcium
Cottage cheese - 20 gm only 14 mg calcium
Cream cheese spread - 24 gm 67 mg calcium
    Fruit yoghurt - 1 X 200 gm tub 250 mg calcium
    Natural yoghurt - 1 X 200 gm tub 390 mg calcium
Baked beans - ½ cup 40 mg calcium
Canned sardines (with bones) - 60g (½) tin 200mg calcium
Canned salmon (with bones) - 50g (¼ cup) 100 mg calcium
Broccoli and sesame seeds - Smaller but useful amounts of calcium.

There is also a great site, but not sure if we are suppose to post websites????

    hope that helps some what

Oh thank you all so much. It's just what I needed to hear. He is a fantastic eater (he eats more than his 3.5year old brother) so eats a very well balanced diet.
