Breastfeeding and Panadol

Told you i'd be back again soon with some more questions

Just wondering if it's ok to take panadol/panamax whilst breast feeding? I've had a dull headache since yesterday afternoon and havent wanted to take anything for it, im assuming it is ok to take as i was given some panadol after the birth of my baby for back pain.... although i had not breast feed him and didnt actually get to feed him until some hours later due to him being in SCU.

Thanks in advance, going to hang my washing out and hoping to have some answers by the time i come back and if it all good im going to take some panadol and hopefully get rid of this ache.

Panadol is fine. Panamax should be too, but you might want to check that

Thanks so much ladies, i knew i could count on BB to give me the answers i need ..... i'm going to take a few panadol now and hope this head ache goes away.

I would actually stay away from Panadeine and anything that contains codeine. It is a drying agent and might affect your milk. Panadol and any product that contains paracetemol (like Panamax) or ibuprofen is fine to take.

Cold and flu medications that contain drying agents to clear up mucous are also not good, but antihistamines are usually okay.

I was told nurofen was not safe same as during pregnancy but panadol is fine.

No, anti-inflammatories are fine while bfing - in fact, if you've had a c/s you're on stronger anti-inflammatories and other painkillers than nurofen while you're still in hospital!

Hmm I was also told by my GP to stay off Nurofen while BF...
Panadol is def OK though...

I have and will only take panadol/panamax ...thankfully i managed to get rid of my headache after a good sleep last night and have had a head ache free day today whihc is great.

LOL, I thought Voltaren was not to be taken while bfing too but then was told that that's what most people are given after a c/s No probs.
If you are ever curious as to what meds are appropriate to take while feeding you can call the 'Mothersafe' help line based at the women's and children's hospital. They are FABULOUS and are up to date with their information as they are researching it all the time. The line is only open during business hours but it's well worth a call if your query falls in that time frame. I rang them last week cause we had gastro and I wanted to know if I could take Immodium or something. She said that 0.03% of the drug would be excreted in my milk, and presented me with the recommendations and some general health information. She asked for my contact details and said someone would follow me up later (if I was ok with that). I was SO impressed.
