    Unhappy help! possible TMI

    Hi all;

So for the last few days I have had a red spot just under my nipple, about an inch sized circle, it tender and hard when you touch it.
Im thinking it mastitis. But Im not entriely sure.
Im thinking there are two possible causes, one Miss H is teething rather badly and she could have bit it during a night feed and I just didnt wake up to it. Or I had a hayfever tablet the other day, that the chemist said was ok to use whilst breastfeeding, so I took it without reading the info first, I read the info later and it said not to be used with bfing.

But I am in so much pain. it hurts to sit, let alone feed. I have put up with it for the last few days cause I honestly thought it would resolve itself, but it hasn't.

So now I need some help! Please anyone?

    Cheers in advance

    Justine

try some warm compress and massage the area, i know it hurts but it sounds like mastitis. Try to massage when your lo is feeding or hand express. Good luck!

    Hi Justine,
It could be a blocked duct. Have a shower and let the warm water run on your breast and 'try' and massage the lump - not too much that it hurts. Have your baby feed with her chin pointing in the direction of the lump, wether it be a normal hold or under the arm hold but try to still feed off that side as much as possible.
If it is mastitis I think you get flu like symptoms and a rash. Don't quote me on that though.
If it doesn't clear up in a few days go and see your GP

Sounds like a blockage - defnitely do what you can to relieve it. Any flu symptoms? They would indicate mastitis also.
Give the ABA a call for advice on how best to deal with it - they'll have some more tips you can try.

    thank you all so much!

Well I have hayfever at the moment which makes everything a bit harder. So Im sneezing, runny nose, headaches, etc...

I will give the aba a call and have a chat though, and will make an appointment with a gp on tuesday, considering tomorrow is a public holiday.
A shower sounds fantastic anyhow, now I have the perfect excuse!

Don't hesitate taking yourself off to an afterhours clinc or such like if you feel dreadful befor eyou can see the gp - sometimes it will sort itself out but sometimes you really need antibiotics and mastitis can really knock you about.

Yep its red and raised, well at least it feels raised when I touch it

I had forgotten about the after hours clinic, I always forget that those sorts of clinics exist these days

I had a red, raised and very sore lump above my left nipple about a month ago. I thought it might be a major pimple (I get adult acne) but there was no discharge or head on it or anything.

I put some antiseptic cream on it which most of the pain go away.

It's still there, and the same size, and still hurts when I touch it, but it doesn't throb anymore.

The only reason I mention it is becuase I have pierced nipples, and apparently it's not uncommon to get blocked ducts with nipple piercings...and yours sounds exactly the same as mine...so the girls above are probably right!

    Sounds like its infected
    feed feed feed
express express express (hand expressing in a warm shower is good)
    massage the lump
If you have the shakes/fevers or generally feel unwell get thee to a doctor for antibiotics asap
you can also see a womens health physio and they will ultrasound the lump to help clear it
    good luck

Owie! That sounds painful!! Yep, as above, its probably a blocked duct & will develop into mastitis. Do as suggested, warm compress, hot showers, gentle massage, feeds with baby's chin at the lump (the sucking motion will help as the chin will massage the lump). And after a feed you can use a cold compress for any inflammation.

On the hey fever meds.. Call Mother safe 9382 6539 or 1800 647 848 . they can tell you if its safe while BFing. Usually products will say no but are not completely up to date. Mothersafe will be able to offer you the most up to date information on the safety of the medication while breastfeeding.

    Thank you all so much!
last night she fed like a trooper, she only wanted that side which meant that I got no sleep. The pain was incredible though.
This morning when I got up it felt less sore, and feltlike it had overall lessened. This afternoon I'm pretty good. The pain is only there when Miss H feeds. Other than that it seems to have resolved itself!
So typical though, everytime I ask something like this on here, it seems to resolve itself asap...
