Question What foods to avoid for reflux BF babies?

Does anyone know what/if there are any foods that wil affect breastmilk and a reflux baby? I'm wondering if there are foods that i'm eating that might also be triggering DD2's reflux.

    TIA

    Hi,

The basic message for breastfeeding mothers is that you can eat a normal diet and you don't need to cut out or restrict your diet. But there are some special circumstances. There is a high correlation between cows milk protein intolerance and reflux. Check your family history for clues. is there a history of allergies or food intolerances in either side of the family? If you choose to go on a dairy free diet please see a dietician to ensure that your are eating enough (this is for your well being - your body will take care of the milk.
Bryan Vartabedian's book "Colic Solved" is a great read and available through ABA's store Mothers Direct

    Thanks Barb.
Do you have any othr tips for reflux babies? I've never had anything to do with this stuff before.
I'm currently expressing off about 40mls each feed to start with to slow do the flow a bit for her and feeding her almost upright. (shes having zantac too - only since tuesday though).

Hi, you can also tilt the cot, keep them upright for 30 minutes after a feed (swings or rockers are great), change their bottom before a feed and roll bub to the side instead of crunching the tummy, dummies help increase saliva as helping to sooth a little as well as just been a good comforter. As the medication works, they still may be fussy for sometime as they can 'remember' the pain associated, 2 weeks is should all be getting better. They generally will stay snack feeders for some time, so have smaller more frequent feeds. Even with the medication the reflux can cause them discomfort (not painful as such but they know somethings going on), so some squirming/face pulling/red eye sockets may still appear.

:yeahthat:, and often reflux babies sleep better upright...I had D in a sling for a long time (upright against my chest) but she wouldn't tolerate cradle hold like N loved.
I got a wedge shaped change mat for the change table too..or you can buy a rubber wedge from Clark Rubber to go under your existing one.
TBH i didn't have to avoid anything. Once the zantac kicked in (D was on it at 4 days old) she was a different kid.

Sunshine, sometimes reflux babies prefer to have small feeds more often, so you might find allowing her to feed frequently helps. It sounds like you are already doing the right things, so hopefully it will settle down soon

If you suspect that their could be a food intolerance, such as cows' milk protein, it could be an idea to undergo an elimination diet to find out. However reflux can also resolve itself after a few weeks, so if you find the thought of an elimination diet daunting, you could perhaps wait for a while to see what happens first.

    All the best hun
