You think after 3 bouts of mastitis with DS1 I'd know what i was doing... but just need some reassurance please. Do I position bub's chin towards the blocked duct? And do i start each feed on that side til it clears? Think i got it after feeding lying down in bed last night as it's on the lower outside of the breast... anyone else find they get problems feeding in bed? (besides regurge on the sheets...)
To unblock duct:
warmth
feed baby from that side first, positioning chin towards blockage
express with pump or by hand until empty - gently massage duct if that helps
cold pack
ibuprofen if you have to
express other side if needed so you don't get a matching pair!
I have been finding with particular blocked ducts, that a warm/hot shower helps, as well as massaging the spot thats swollen and sore. start with circular motions and then massage towards the nipple. Get out as much as you can, then I like to bend over, in the shower, so the gravity helps with the flow too.
I am finding this problem with both sides, and its the underneath of both breasts. I like feeding in bed, but find its too messy and it's hard to get up and change sides..lol.
i love feeding lieing in bed but have some preparations to reduce mess. i have a towel under the sheet (to protect lambswool/mattress) and stack of facewashers next 2 bed. one face washer goes under bubs head/feeding breast and another i use for other breast if it starts flowing.
expressing in a hot shower is good to help clear blocked ducts.
